Edward Snowden has powerful allies in new Trump administration
NY Post ^ | 11/30/24 | Jon Levine

Deep state whistleblower Edward Snowden may be getting a new lease on life.

The famous fugitive, who has been living in Russia since 2013 after leaking classified National Security Agency documents showing the US was engaged in a massive surveillance program, has been a cause célèbre among left-wing and free speech activists, but has received a chillier reception from Republicans.

But Snowden has some powerful allies in President-elect Trump’s cabinet, insiders told The Post.

Trump’s pick for director of national intelligence, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, co-sponsored a resolution in September 2020 calling on the United States to drop all charges against Snowden.

A person close to Gabbard told The Post clemency for Snowden issue remained important to her and that she would likely push for that in Trump’s second term.

“I certainly think if asked that that is the direction she would push,” the insider said.

Gabbard co-sponsored the bill with Florida GOP congressman Matt Gaetz, who Trump nominated to be attorney general Though Gaetz was forced to withdraw, he is still expected to retain influence in Trump world.

“Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump said in a Truth Social post after Gaetz withdrew.

I saw Snowden interviewed and he asked a simple question: If he (Snowden) was so dangerous regarding all of the secrets he had, why didn’t Obama simply drop charges in order to get him out of Russia and back to the US? After all, if you’re loaded with US top-secret information, the LAST PLACE any US leader would want to see you is spending years deep in the (perceived) enemy’s camp, meaning Russia, in this case.

Something doesn’t add up regarding our treatment of him.

Given what we know now, I think Snowden tried to tell us all, what was really going on. I consider him a hero.

Trump should have the Feds charge Snowden. Then he should commute his sentence. So he’ll be able to return to the U.S. without having to worry about getting charged.

Looks like something from a science fiction movie.

He’s already told the most “dangerous” information: that US intelligence agencies sweep up and record every phone call and much of the Internet traffic in the US. So now they want to keep him out of the public eye so people don’t think about that or ask questions and to serve as a warning to any other whistle blowers.

I can never understand how he was not protected under whistleblower laws.

They made the story about him, not the crimes he exposed

I do too. I hope he is vindicated.

He was already indicted for espionage. So Trump could do it as soon as he gets in.

Bet he has a lot more to share with the world, He worked for the CIA before he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton. That is probably the big problem.

Pardon Edward Snowden?

What an awful, politically insane idea.

Pardon a guy who spilled every USA Intelligence secret he knew to the Soviet Union?

The USA Political Left will attack USA Conservatives for being "Putin Puppets" for the next 50 years!

No matter what machinations Washington DC comes up with, he would be a complete fool to return to the United States. And he should not travel to any country where we could snatch him. Whether charges are dropped or not, we no longer operate under rule of law, but rule of whim. All it would take is a federal judge to rule the pardon illegal for one reason or another, and for the Supreme Court to refuse to take it up.
Currently in the United States, policy gets created, and the courts rubberstamp it.

He should just stay where he is and enjoy life.

Snowden and Assange will hopefully be pardoned quickly. And the Silk Road guy have his sentence reduced or retried.

Also, you do not have to be charged to be pardoned. They do not even have to name a specific crime. A pardon can be issued for a specific period of time.

A few years ago I read that he was being considered for a pardon by Trump. According to the story, he hated Trump so much he didn’t want a pardon from Trump. IDK if it’s true.

No indictment or charges are necessary for a pardon.
