A Dallas anesthesiologist who was convicted of tampering with IV bags has been sentenced this Wednesday to 190 years in prison.
In April, Raynaldo Ortiz was found guilty of tampering with IV bags by injecting them with Bupivacaine, an anesthetic drug. Jurors said they were left with no doubt of his guilt and convicted Ortiz on all 10 counts against him. Sentencing was set to begin on July 22, then was pushed back to Sept. 16 and again on Sept. 18.
A total of 10 patients were rushed to nearby emergency rooms after problems during their procedures. Additionally, Dr. Melanie Kaspar died after bringing a tainted IV bag home to treat her dehydration. Ortiz was only charged in four of the cases, but all of the alleged incidents were included in the judge's sentencing decision.
Ortiz was not in the courtroom, having waived his right to sit in Wednesday's sentencing hearing. He chose to sit in another room in the courthouse, out of sight of the victims and their families.
Seven people gave victim impact statements at the hearing.
The first was a letter that was read aloud from patient Jimmy Eller. He said the two years since Ortiz poisoned him had been the worst of his life, "my world was turned upside down."
He said the medical emergency caused by the tainted IV bag has led to long-term complications, heart problems, kidney stones, depression and a loss of independence that has impacted his relationships. "Now I feel stuck in this body, a prisoner in my home," he said.
Patient Kelly Pfeiffer gave the next impact statement. She was immediately emotional and cried as she began speaking about "being poisoned by Dr. Ortiz."

Raynaldo Ortiz was being reprimanded because he made to many mistakes resulting in harm to patients.
So he had the brilliant idea of poisoning random IV bag so other doctors in the hospital would have people die under their care as well.

How did the investigators track it back to Ortiz?
Surveillance cameras caught him fiddling with the IV bags, and loading syringes with the drug cocktails he was injecting them with.
Waf his reason for doing this ever revealed?
Other poster indicated he was in trouble because patients were dying under his anesthesia care, so wanted patients with other anesthesiologists to die to make him look better. Typical caring physician.
For good behavior, he could get out in 110 years.
Some doctors kill people all the time and don’t realize they can get in trouble for it if it is too blatant.

My wife is an RN in a surgical ward.
She has been routinely testing IV bags for punctures for awhile now. She has found some with hypodermic needle sized holes in the bag.
Scary stuff.
Prison doctor on the cheap. Prostate checkups in prison will save money-no need for a blood test.
Reminds me of that airline pilot in Connecticut that fed his wife into a wood-chipper (idea borrowed for "Fargo").
He was flying passenger jets around the country after he did the deed. Not nice to find out your doctor or pilot is insane.

I had major surgery in September at a hospital outside of Dallas. I’m glad I didn’t read this before my surgery too.
Why isn’t he sentenced to death? Blows my mind why we sentence murderers, pedophiles, rapist etc to years in prison on the taxpayer dime when these POS deserve immediate death.
He’s no worse than that vile POS, Fauxi.....
