Social media was abuzz this week after NBC published an article that claimed “Thanksgiving dinner is historically affordable this year” and suggested the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people would cost just $58.08.
The $58 dollar estimate comes from a survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, which has conducted the same survey since 1984. That survey, however, has a limited number of items on it, which together can’t be considered a full Thanksgiving meal, let alone a meal for 10 people.
The survey asks volunteer shoppers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico to search their local grocery stores for the prices for the following items: “Turkey, cubed stuffing, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, frozen peas, fresh cranberries, celery, carrots, pumpkin pie mix and crusts, whipping cream, and whole milk.”
If you’ve ever eaten a Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll notice a few things missing from this list — including potatoes, butter, gravy, and any ingredients needed to turn these basic items into actual dishes.

To find out what $58 can actually buy for Thanksgiving, The Daily Wire went to a local grocery chain – one that wouldn’t be considered the “top tier” chain in the area. Using store rewards deals and choosing cheaper alternatives, we attempted to get items that would be included on a standard Thanksgiving dinner list. Here’s what we were able to get for $58.11 (remember the estimate is $58.08).

Take that $58 canned albacore, a variety of crackers, Dukes mayo (no HFC), green olives, cracked pepper for 15 guests.
If there’s any money left over go down to Dollar Store pick up some cheap soda.

And Thanksgiving is at the end of the month .
“They just don’t get it. It isn’t that you CAN make a Thanksgiving dinner for $58, it’s that so many can’t make the Thanksgiving dinner they WANT or USED to make for $58 . . .”
Exactly. Just 4 years ago, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, our local grocery stores had turkeys for .59 per pound. You could load up on the baking goods at fantastic prices at this time of the year and for $60 you could put on quite a spread. You could get that pound of butter (not margarine) for $2.29 instead of leaving it off the list.

There is a huge buzz on TikTok about a very nice woman who created some pretty good Thanksgiving recipes for about $20 shopping only at the Dollar stores. She’s worth a look. Good Morning America had a recent story on her as well. Her handle is #Dollartreedinners I believe.

The canned and dried was the normal price but fresh was kind of high I thought.
I spent $58 just for dinner for two at our house.
Well, lots of different ways of figuring the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner, but I wouldn’t trust what NBC says if you can’t trust them for the news either.
If you find the right place, you can also get a pretty bad dinner at about that price. Sometimes, it just makes all the difference WHERE you eat. I have experienced both.
Publix had turkeys on sale $.49/lb. so a 13 lb. bird is $6. Bag of potatoes + butter and S/P (mashed potatoes), broth from turkey + flour and S/P (gravy), onions, broth, celery, and bread crumbs (the stuffing), couple bucks for the cranberries + sugar and spices (cranberry sauce), a pie.
Done. Well under $58.
Of course, this doesn't include alcohol ... which will wreck that budget in the worst way. :)
