A popular thyroid medication taken by 23 million Americans may be associated with bone loss, a startling new study finds.
Levothyroxine — marketed under brand names such as Synthroid — is the second-most commonly prescribed medication among older adults in the US. It’s consumed by about 7% of the US population.
The drug addresses hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, by replacing or providing more of a thyroid hormone naturally produced by the body. The study authors, from Johns Hopkins Medicine, linked levothyroxine use to a greater loss of bone mass and bone density over six years — even in older adults with normal thyroid function.

I’m thankful to have my health and be able to workout. I feel like its a health deposit for my future self. I’m hoping I’ll still be setting pr’s in 9 years ;)
To counteract water fluoridation, one can take iodine supplements.
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lugols+2+percent+iodine+solution&crid=NVR94QIDLZ1Q&sprefix=lugols%2Caps%2C143&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_6
I remember when our water got fluoride, because my Great Grandmother was against it. I was probably @9 years old...and I am old now. I drank the stuff for years. Where I live now does not put it in water, but I take iodine anyway.
Smart! I hope RFK Jr can do something about water fluoridation. Have the Feds subsidize fluoride toothpastes for those who want this crud.
I have Lugols here, but I must start taking it every day. In some juice. Or in DMSO.
I hope RFK can do something about a lot of things, including the vax requirements for children!
I have been on levothyroxin for about 7 years. Around that time I started getting back ache regularly. Fifteen years earlier I was getting back ache and started taking 3 mg. a day boron. Pain gone but recurred again so started taking 3 mg. boron morning and evening. Last year at annual physical suggested possible stopping of levo, but after testing said to continue. He also recommended bone density test. Perhaps he was reacting to this new danger info. I apparently have not shrunk much since I upped my boron use 7 years ago, but with some back pain again, I may add another 3 mg. per day to the 6 I am already taking. I am also careful to maintain my 2 to 1 ratio of taking calcium and magnesium supplements. Occasional leg cramps warn me if I am not taking enough.
Gleeaikin, I would encourage you to try UC-II collagen for a month or more.
Your back may feel good again. It stops the autoimmune response from Type 2 collagen leaks from our back discs.
There are two other studied options to help with back disc Type 2 collagen. Contact me back, if interested.
Actually I started adding collagen about 3 weeks ago. but will check the type. Also I take cal/mag in the proper 2/1 ratio daily, and if I get a leg cramp, I up my level a bit or consider if I have been eating/drinking enough calcium or magnesium rich foods. The first and quickest cure of a medical problem I ever did was over 50 years ago, when I read Adelle Davis, Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit, still on sale on line. I was trying to fix incipient varicose veins, but was also taking calcium and magnesium, and never missed another monthly day of work from the woman’s “curse.” It also happens that 2 generations ago, half my ancestors had dairy herds, and I appear to have a higher than average need for calcium.
Hey, gal! Thanks for the ping. I did end up with osteoporosis in 2009 or 10. Fortunately for me, I have a very conscientious MD who set me up for 2 annual Reclast infusions, and now semi annual bone density scans. So far those 2 infusions reversed my osteoporosis in one hip and reversed the osteopenia in the other hip, and I’m maintaining good bone density. I’m also on supplemental calcium and D3 daily, because my parathyroids, damaged in surgery, gave up about 3 years post op. It’s crazy to think I’ll be 20 years post surgery next spring. How did I get old?
My doc has prescribed Prolia for me, and I plan to get my first shot in January.
Have you had any negative side effects?
Hubby has been on levothyroxine daily for at least 30 years. It was affecting his bone density. For about the last 5 years, he has gone overboard on adding food high in calcium daily. Mostly a bowl of dairy stuff (which is gross IMO). His last scan showed that his density had improved a bit.
None whatsoever in the years I’m on it.
No side effects.
It truly is a miracle drug.
Translation: Someone is marketing a new drug aimed at negligible bone loss from using Synthroid.
Ladies! Fancy meeting you lovely ladies both here chatting about osteoporosis 😊👍😊
TgslTakoma— I was thinking about you the other days when looking at my inauguration thread from WAAAAAAY back. 2005
I’m having (well always have) a hard time remembering screen names. And if I generally recall a name the exact spelling often snags me. Like Takoma - you - but my oh my —- just what were the other letters before? Or was it after?
Even more so when much communication with them is done on Facebook.
I have so many fond memories of DC events with you and others. Just wish I had been closer and not on a short leash with my mom.
See Albion occasionally on Trump Train thread ..our fashionista ♥️
