Eggs are available, but pricier, as the holiday baking season begins

Egg prices are rising once more as a lingering outbreak of bird flu coincides with the high demand of the holiday baking season.

But prices are still far from the recent peak they reached almost two years ago. And the American Egg Board, a trade group, says egg shortages at grocery stores have been isolated and temporary so far.

“Those are being rapidly corrected, sometimes within a day,” said Emily Metz, the Egg Board's president and chief executive officer.

The average price for a dozen eggs in U.S. cities was $3.37 in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was down slightly from September, and down significantly from January 2023, when the average price soared to $4.82. But it was up 63% from October 2023, when a dozen eggs cost an average of $2.07.

Metz said the egg industry sees its highest demand in November and December.

“You can’t have your holiday baking, your pumpkin pie, your stuffing, without eggs,” she said.

Avian influenza is the main reason for the higher prices. The current bird flu outbreak that began in February 2022 has led to the slaughter of more than 111 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens. Anytime the virus is found, every bird on a farm is killed to limit the spread of the disease.

I stocked up on Cadbury eggs after Easter, so I’m all set.

Ocala Florida Walmart shoes 18 pack carton of large eggs at $5.87. I remember not long ago (4 years) the cost was 56 cents....

I’ve been getting farm fresh eggs since last Spring along with my neighbor. She met the farmer’s wife at the market a year ago, and so now we both get our eggs from this nice family.

Since their eggs are so much better and fresher than what I can get at the grocery store, we have offered to pay the same as the store’s price. They are thrilled because they lost some customers when they had to raise their prices.

So starting in December we are going to pay $6/dozen. We hope that will help them make ends meet. I love having fresh eggs like this. The quality is far superior, and I like being able to help a small family business stay on its feet.

Remember when the Bidenistas bragged that the July 4th BBQ was $0.16 cheaper if you substitute hotdogs for steaks. Something ridiculous like that.

imo, too!

EVERYTHING that makes the Economy run revolves around the price of fuel.

But, try telling THAT to a Socialist Democrat. *Rolleyes*

Love the "This would all be easier if I had a cow"

Bahahahahaha

That lady has never tried to drench a calf.

Or pulled a nail out of a cow hoof.

Love my ladies but easy they are not. :)

That bit still cracks me up a decade later!

Yeah, I want a dairy cow in the worst way. Beau keeps telling me that I DON’T. So far, he won’t budge on it. And I’m starting to come around. ;)

In reality, if I needed raw milk for anything, I can just ask my neighbor. We have a nice set up in our ‘hood’ with very sharing and caring family farms. When CovidBS-19 was ‘all the rage’ the dairy was told to dump 20% of their milk because it wasn’t needed for schools, so we all had all the ‘free’ milk we needed, plus they found some other outlets for it. It didn’t go to waste. I learned how to make butter that year, too! I reciprocated with an abundance of peaches the next season, and Beau knocked 20% off their crop land rent for the 2 years of the BS we all had to endure.

Man, I DESPISE Mother Government! Ugh! Just leave us ALONE, would ya? Please?
