Lions running back David Montgomery has revealed how he overcame his dark thoughts. Montgomery said he was overwhelmed with stress and had suicidal thoughts when he was a rookie on the Bears in 2019, with fantasy football managers contributing to the situation.
“When I was a rookie, I had a real, real stressful time in the league,” Montgomery said on Sports Illustrated’s “Fantasy Dirt” podcast with Michael Fabiano and Lindsay Rhodes.
“I was at a point where I would have this suicidal thought and it just a depressing and a scary year for me. And unfortunately, fantasy, the people in fantasy were kind of helping — they were helping me kind of be aided to feeling that way. I was at a point where I was scared to live.” “And I was in a very dark place, very very dark place. And from that point on, hearing my nephew’s voice, I made a vow to myself and a promise to myself that I would never, ever allow anybody else to have that much control over my mind, my body to make me feel like I wasn’t worth anything or valued in a light to where I had a purpose on this Earth.”

Because making millions of dollars to play a game is stressful 🙄.
He was a horrible fit for the Bears. So glad he’s somewhere where his ability can blossom.
Such a sweet and humble man. But a monster to try to tackle.
he had nice stats for his time here...on mostly crummy teams...
what made him a bad fit ?
👍
I wish he would know what we say here.... David is a very good football player. He should be very proud of the success he has had. He’s already been able to translate his talent into far more financial success than 98% of his peers.
ENJOY LIFE young man. You’ve ended up in a great place. And, it should be nothing but FUN from here on out.
I love fantasy football... I know this business puts pressure on players. You’ve risen above it. Use your status now to encourage younger players.
And, BTW... THANKS! :-)
Of course, some non-FF fans can be like that. Personally, I couldn't root for a player to be injured.
But when they cheered DeShaun Watson getting injured, I'd like to think it's more because he's a sexual assaulter, than just because he was bad.
He was a great player, until he got doing bad things, and I think it was psychological.
Exactly
An obviously mentally unstable liberal. Guess the NFL should have fantasy league support kittens and coloring books for the easily offended.
The city of Houston put DeShaun on a very high pedestal. He wasn’t able to stay on it. The fall was long and hard. So much so, he never recovered.
His contract with Cleveland has to be the dumbest sports business move in history.
For sure, many fantasy players take the game far too seriously. But there are idiots everywhere in life. When a player is killing me, I quietly root for just a mildly sprained ankle… just enough to require 1 week of rest. This is my confession.
He is not the only RB at Detroit, sharing carries with Gibbs. Less wear and tear on his body and less stress to be the “THE” man.
Coach Campbell is a better coach, so his designed plays seem to better suit his skill set.
Chicago’s OL was marginal versus the Lions’
Winning definitely improves a player’s outlook.
Players will run through walls for MCDC.
Go Lions!
