Trendy weight-loss drugs making headlines for shrinking waistlines may also be shrinking the human heart and other muscles, according to a new University of Alberta study whose authors say should serve as a “cautionary tale” about possible long-term health effects of these drugs.
“If people have been prescribed these drugs, then the benefits should likely far exceed the risks,” says Jason Dyck, lead author on the study, pediatrics professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and a member of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute.
“However, the growing number of people who may be taking these drugs who do not meet the eligibility criteria and who are not at risk have a different risk-reward calculation that they should be made aware of.”
Dyck and his team set out to study why a reported side-effect of the leading weight-loss drug Ozempic is the loss of skeletal muscle.

I’ll pass.
I tell everyone I know that these new weight loss medications/drugs are bad for them but they won’t listen.
Because, lizard venom. Gila Monster, to be exact.
Eat better and exercise - it’s safe and effective!
Huh. So THAT’S what all the democrats are on.
It’s poison.
It has a vibe of a future class action lawsuit TV commercial, doesn’t it?
Shrinks the heart muscle, probably permanently, yet, it is still allowed to be sold to the public?
Who’s getting paid off to ignore the danger and at what dollar levels?
Very Grinch-like. I think I’ll avoid it.
I tried it for 2 weeks and started to get floates in my eyes.
Coincidence maybe but since one rare side effect is waking up blind...I stopped taking it.
I like seeing :)
Shrinking because of less fat which typically surrounds the heart of an obese person?
“I tell everyone I know that these new weight loss medications/drugs are bad for them but they won’t listen.”
I tell them that being morbidly obese is bad for them, but they won’t listen.
Can I do it ‘til I need glasses?
It seems that virtually all the newer drugs put out by big pharma has horrible side effects.
The drugs that are the safest are the much, much older ones.
The more the drug messes with the body, the worse its side effects are.
Every other ad on TV and terrestrial radio is for a new drug.
We are a nation of profitable lab animals.
And the driving force is the profit.
It has nothing to do with getting or keeping us healthy. It’s just an excuse they use.
Michael Brown’s the author? The gentle giant himself?
They better go get a COVID shot to get it back to normal.
I dont know if you’re joking or not lol
The blindness sometimes happens instantly (sometimes is the wrong word, as this happens so so rarely that it is not a big risk)
And if you’re gonna face or are facing bad illnesses from the weight, then it’s worth it.
I would have gladly stayed on it long term if I hadn’t had that issue.
And it could VERY WELL be a coincidence, the floaters.
I got scared :)
Good luck and if it’s works, great!
Sounds like a bad thing at first. But, what if you're diagnosed with cardiomegaly? MAY also be shrinking...ALWAYS pay attention to those caveats. I think I'll wait until I saw more evidence.
