Final Observations on the Sally Hemings Controversy (from Potomac Tea Partyâs Guardians of History team) - The Left Spins Another Yarn to Trash the Founders
Jefferson is a sinner, like all of us.
I generally think the preponderance of evidence is that Hemings and Jefferson had relations.
I think what matters in this case is whether he lived up to his responsibilities as husband and father. I’m presuming their relations were closer to being husband and wife, as opposed to master and slave, when I say this.
Sorry, I didn’t mean his father, but two of his nephews.
There is no DNA proof of exactly who the father was, but my money has always been on Randolph.
Our first visit to Monticello some years ago was just delightful. We also enjoyed the second one, but during our third visit, about 5 years ago, we vowed not to return. The place was awash in leftist nonsense, and they were presenting this story of Jefferson’s relationship with Hemmings as fact.
I’ve never been there. I just read old books.
Re: 14 - I think it’s fair to say that Jefferson tolerated slavery. Monticello and the United States could not have been sustained without slavery being taken into account.
It is a testament to the Founders that the US overcame slavery.
Jefferson was trying to create a union, and a nation based upon a historically revolutionary idea. As much as he despised slavery, he knew that a consensus would have to be achieved first.
You might have a point of alarm, if Jefferson was accused of having relations with multiple slaves. I don’t view it as a point of an alarm if he was having relations with just one slave and he was treating her as he would a wife.
It isn’t an issue for me, because I don’t believe there is any evidence at all that he had relations with any slave.
Ok. I just thought you might be extraprotective of Jefferson.
For me, it’s a non-issue as long as he did right by her if they were having relations.
No, I’m not ‘extra protective’. I just demand proof of accusations, and there simply isn’t any in this case.
My understanding is that all Jefferson males had an anomalous characteristic on the Y chromosome that is infallibly passed from father to son. Obviously, it cannot be passed from father to daughter because only male children have a Y chromosome.
Therefore we know nothing one way or the other from DNA about the paternity of any Hemmings female child and her descendants. We know nothing one way or the other from DNA about the paternity of any Hemmings male child if the line of descent is broken by a female.
We are left with two known entirely male-line descendants of Hemmings.
The first of them DOES NOT have the Y chromosome anomaly and therefore there is no male Jefferson ancestor in that line anywhere along the way. Therefore this male line descendant proves that no Jefferson fathered any male in that line whether through Hemmings or subsequently through one of her female descendants.
The second known male-line descendant of Hemmings DOES have the Y chromosome anomaly and so therefore has some male Jefferson as an ancestor somewhere along the line. But it does NOT prove that Thomas Jefferson himself was the male Jefferson ancestor as any other male Jefferson could be responsible for the Y chromosome anomaly. There are plenty of candidates for the other male Jefferson supplying the Y chromosome anomaly.
Exactly. What little I know of DNA, the only way to be sure is to have direct relations compared…parent and offspring. There is no way 200 years on we have access to compare anything truly relevant.
What leftists do to our history is disgusting.
I’ll skip over the endless civil war condescension in every site.
My mother adored George Washington. Further she adored that the Mt Vernon Ladies’ Assoc. was still unencumbered by government dollars, and solely supported by donors as her and dad.
I wanted to join but having seen what has gone on in various historic sites in the last 10 years, I was getting skeptical. Mom was so sure they would still be great due to that non-gov support.
Then we took our son 2 years ago. Post-riots, you know. In the little guest servant quarters to the side, the tour started and the woman immediately pontificated about “ENSLAVED PEOPLE” - why we have to use this terminology and convoluted English. I kept my mouth shut.
Then as we moved on I talked to a woman in the group. She wanted to bring her granddaughter to see the place she had loved, and she said she HAD been active with MVLA, going to meetings etc. she let it drop because she didn’t like the way it was going. Validation on my fears.
This garbage happens everywhere. Communists who hate America have so taken over, it doesn’t matter if it’s government or not. Just like schools - people assume private will be good, but our Catholic schools have been as pathetic as public in their agendas.
Free Republic race baiters and south bashers will embrace you
Btw
Did you sign up to entertain us today or yourself?
News flash
We have bigger concerns right now but thanks
Oh, no, Mount Vernon, too?
I am also a huge George Washington fan.
You believe in a fiction.
Sally Hemmings was his wife’s actual half-sister.
There were a number of Jefferson males around Monticello besides Thomas who would have known Sally. One nephew in particular frequented the entertainments that Monticello blacks threw for themselves. He’s always been a likely candidate.
“I believe the rumor started as political...and it is more likely than not....a relative of Thomas’.”
Jefferson once had a journalist hatchetman named James Callender working for him. Probably an 1800 version of James Carville.
At some point Callender had a falling out with Jefferson and turned on him. Callender is supposedly a source of the story.
Hemming’s kids would have resembled Jefferson’s due to Sally and Jefferson’s wife being half sisters. Even more so if Jefferson or one of his male relatives was the father.
The nephew is Isham Randolph Jefferson, Randolph’s son
