Grocery chains vie for a place on Thanksgiving tables with turkey dinner deals

With Thanksgiving less than two weeks away, Walmart, Target, Aldi and other grocers are competing for a place on holiday tables with turkey dinner deals and other promotions to tempt Americans who haven't recovered from recent food price inflation.

Walmart, the nation's largest food retailer, first bundled the makings of a traditional turkey feast into a meal deal three years ago. This year, the 29-item offer, which includes a frozen turkey and ingredients for side dishes, costs less than $55 and is intended to serve eight. That calculates to less than $7 per person.

Target's version for four people costs $20, $5 less than the company's 2023 Thanksgiving meal, and includes a frozen turkey, stuffing mix and canned green beans and canned jellied cranberry sauce. Aldi's offers a frozen Butterball turkey with gravy mix as well as pumpkin ingredients for pumpkin pie and ingredients for side dishes like sweet potato casserole. The German-owned supermarket chain priced it for $47 and said that was less than it charged for the same items in 2019.

We will be serving Oprah Henfree our midget white turkey who came in at 12 pounds 9 ounces. Cost: a couple of tears because she was a good bird

:)

Turkeys are not that hard to raise if you are already raising chickens.

Cute name for your Turkey. ;)

Yes, adding a turkey or two would be easy. We already raise a beef steer every 18 months. The wild turkey that Beau has gotten for us is some really good eating, too!

We ordered Thanksgiving dinner from Food City. Usually we do more, but we’re headed for a cruise a couple days later and didn’t want to deal with the folderol.

I have given up telling the cubs not to name the meat animals. :)

The Midget Whites are really good birds, they do not grow as large and so get along well with the chickens. One year we did Royal Palms but while they were pretty the meat was not as good and they were to delicate for our colder climate.

FWIW, Publix has whole frozen turkeys on sale here in Southwest Florida at $1.19/lb.

Actually, $0.49/lb. At least that’s what we paid for our 15 pounder two days ago here on the Treasure Coast.

After cooking Thanksgiving dinners for 65+ years, my elderly mom is throwing in towel on cooking one this year. It is a 2 day chore to prepare and cook the dinner. This year she is going with a tenderloin, nuked potatoes and green beans..

I totally get it. I think I’ve only been doing the main cooking for 35 years. I often brine the turkey two days before, then marinate the day before, but this year skipping all that and will just inject the bird with orange juice.

If you spend $50 at our Piggly Wiggly, you can have turkey for 99-cents a pound.

I got those breasts for the 99-cents a pound price and didn’t buy much of anything else. I’ll keep it moist, as I know that’s always a complaint with turkey breast.

We have two dog training raccoons who are named ‘Jennifer Cooniston’ and ‘George Cooney.’

They are just available so the young dogs can smell them, so they know what to track. George or Jennifer are never harmed in any way.

Could be. I guess it depends on how many people are gathered together. We are usually with our kids and grandkids, so a full turkey is usually what we do. We will leave Grandma some leftovers in her freezer I’m sure.

Exactly! Milk, in Wisconsin of all places, is crazy-expensive right now - over $3 a gallon, which I’ve not seen in my lifetime.

I mean, the streets FLOW with the stuff! Why so expensive? Cheese & Butter, too!

Answer: See chart above!

I'll alter my previous comment a bit. Cooking a full turkey dinner from scratch is a big deal. Those days maybe over. Why prepare mashed potatoes from scratch when you can buy them premade from Costco, etc..

Ok, I’m just an odd person. I cook from scratch every day. So it’s second nature to me. Doing the whole Thanksgiving meal is a real chore, but can be broken up into pieces. If people want to help by making a side, that’s good.

I like cooking from scratch because 1.) it tastes better and 2.) I know what goes into it. There aren’t any preservatives or ingredients to round it out or whatever. Homemade mashed potatoes and gravy are one of my specialties. I enjoy hearing my family compliment me on my work, too. Very often, there’s a third benefit. It usually costs less than the premade stuff.

I do understand why people want to go the route of pre-made dishes, but I can pre-make them just as easily.

People who are tired of cooking after 50+ years of doing it deserve our love, honor, and respect. There comes a point where a younger generation needs to take over.

My elderly mom has cooked everything from scratch for most of her cooking life, until Costco entered the picture.
