Obesity Rates Around the World
STATISTA ^ | 11/17/2024 | Anna Fleck

Posted on 11/17/2024 7:16:30 PM PST by SeekAndFind

In most OECD countries that collect self-reported weight data, more than half of adults are overweight or obese (2023 or latest available data).

However, as Statista's Anna Fleck reports, obesity prevalence was particularly high in the United States, with just over a third of respondents saying that they are obese in 2023.

In Chile and the United Kingdom rates were just above one in four, while Korea had the lowest share of people with obesity of the countries studied at just 4.9 percent.

According to the World Health Organization, a body mass index (BMI) of over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 obese.

Obesity is linked to a range of health issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and several common cancers. Although awareness is increasing around the topic, obesity is still often misunderstood due to misconceptions of it being solely due to poor lifestyle choices, whereas factors such as genetic predisposition and environmental influences are also important.

My wife teaches in the bad part of town, where the kids live in government housing, have Medicaid, are on EBT, etc. Fully welfarized intergenerational lifestyles.

The kids are all fat.

Deep red states. Figures.

PS. Japan was left off the chart. They are probably about 2.5. On it with South Korea.

I saw a woman at Walmart the other day who was twice the size of the Skipper. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a woman that large before. Amazingly, she was still able to walk. We have a serious, serious problem in our country.

Too many readily available snack foods, plus eating between meals, while virtually little to no exercise. Sitting in front of a computer screen(while I type sitting in front of a computer screen) and doing no physical exercise is no good. Even simple house cleaning is a better form of exercise than none.

We certainly do, and I am as guilty as anyone. At 5’8” I was 165 or less through my first 45 years, crept into the 190’s in my 50’s and during Covid, reached 240 for a brief moment. I started using sémaglutide almost 1 year ago and have effortlessly dropped 44 lbs. Now that I am withing range, but still overweight, I will get back to exercise to try and get down to 180 or less. The impact of sémaglutide is considerable, all dimensions of health have improved, lipids, A1C, etc. are much better than before. I was never diabetic, borderline, or diabetic, but I am sure I would have headed there if I hadn’t dropped weight. As soon as the health insurance analysts have enough data to quantify the benefits of sémaglutide on near-diabetics and non-diabetics who are overweight or obese, I expect that the drug will be widely covered, and that will have a stunning impact on health and health care expenditures.

I remember some reports that “they” had “updated” the parameters for obesity. They jiggered with the stats so much, Michael Jordan, in his prime basketball days, would be classified as ‘obese.’

Can you turn off the weight loss?

I remember reading an interview with some gal who took that and lost too much weight .... and, could not get back to a healthy weight/look.

Ozempic face, I think is what it’s called.

Good luck with your situation.

How can they blame white Christian heterosexual men?

Obviously this has to be caused by some sort of racist, xenophobic, homophobic, toxic masculinity.

I pay for their breakfast THREE TIMES!

First, Mom gets EBT to pay for groceries for breakfast. But Mom is still stoned at 8 a.m., so the school district provides free breakfast too. But since Momis still stoned at 9 a.m., the fat kid misses that too. So they come to my wife’s class at 10 a.m. after Mom is slightly sober, and they’re starving. That’s when my lovely wife pulls out the snacks we personally bought at COSTCO to feed them.

Paid for their breakfast THREE FREAKING TIMES!

During lockdowns I put on 8 pounds rather quickly, and didn’t realize it until my annual checkup. I rarely weighed myself between doctor visits, though we owned a scale. When doc told me how much I had gained in that year, I was determined to lose that weight.

Enter Noom. I really enjoyed the program when I first started. I learned a lot, mostly about myself and why I eat (usually after dinner snacks). I learned some new skills. I learned I needed to get more exercise. I bought a new scale, and weigh myself every day. It helps that old shock factor that I faced before.

Now, I really thrive on making sure I get in 10,000 steps every day, and almost always 10 flights of stairs, too. Mr. FF and I walk through the neighborhood or a nearby park every day. We found that it’s a great stress reliever for him. He can tell me all about the problems he has at his job, and then be ready to tackle them again. Been doing this now for 3 years consistently. I also get in body weight exercises a few times a week. Just basic stuff, but it keeps me limber. Not to mention the housework and yard work.

Thanks, FDA.

As far as that map, self-reported is not that accurate, IMO.

I thought NYers were much more obese than what I see here in NH.
