Is the movie Dune 2 worth watching? I have seen a trailer and the one young evil knife fighter looks like Sam Briton, the guy who worked for the Biden administration and stole luggage? I was waiting to see smudged lipstick on his face. Also, I think I saw the actor who played the evil dude in “No Country for Old Men.” But his lines seemed too stiff and predictable. All I could think was that he would be pulling out that Hydronic Hose Gun he had in “No Country for Old Men.” Visually, the movie looks striking and everybody is riding a sand worm like you take a bus or subway. I think the visuals are the best. Some EVIL scenes look horrific -- like you just woke up in some mad, black and white, dystopic world. Whoever did that was the Devil himself or just plain ingenious nobody. Everything seemed fresh and new visually, but there is also an Arabic/Mexican vibe that seems out of place. Let me know what you think.
Dune 2 is terrible. The whole focus of the movie is how evil religion is to look to Paul as a Messiah.
I’m looking forward to Dune:Prophecy on HBO. It will be interesting to see how that’s done.
I really like IMDB. My favorite area is the trivia section. It’s amazing what facts are hidden away there.
The imdb forums were very helpful and entettaining. I was mad when Amazon deleted them.
“ I liked the TV series best.”
100% correct. Not even close.
If you liked the novel, the SyFy miniseries is the ONLY adaptation that can explain the Duniverse to someone who hasn’t read the book.
The complaints about the miniseries are all about the fact that the spectacle and special effects aren’t up to what a full length feature film can do.
This can be "explained" by tvtropes' The Rule of Cool.
Regards,
The story does NOT denigrate Christianity. There is no need for Christians to be "put off" by "Dune."
Rather, the form of belief system in "Dune" is a kind of engineered religion, much like a cult.
It's perfectly acceptable to take pot-shots at "false" religions.
Regards,
The novel, DUNE doesn’t denigrate Christianity. The movie pretty much preaches that a natural impulse towards religion is a curse that will destroy mankind.
I saw it a bit differently. I saw the religious component more as a “what if” story with a clear parallel to Jewish society under Roman rule. The Jews got their messiah (and ours) and rejected him. Within a few decades, they were thoroughly defeated by Rome and dispersed from their homeland, not returning for almost 19 centuries, and only then after an attempted genocide and centuries of oppression and discrimination.
The Fremen got their messiah in the movie and, while there was some dissent, things worked out quite a bit better for them than for the Jews. There are other clear parallels in the movie - Dr Yueh and Judas obviously. Then there is the Liet/Kynes character, who was a spiritual leader among the Fremen but also worked for the emperor. This was an important character because unlike the real life Pharisees, who also were religious leaders, Liet followed and accepted the messiah, rather than betraying him and having him killed.
That’s not necessarily a pro-Christian outlook or anything since it represents a misunderstanding of Jesus and his significance, but it also isn’t necessarily anti-religion either.
Dune 2 is quite good and very entertaining. It at least tries to be faithful to the book and succeeds as well as a movie can.
Aside from Zendaya, the acting is excellent. They elevated her significance beyond what she is in the book, I guess to provide some balance to Paul’s character.
It’s a well made movie, far better than most anything Hollyweird has produced in years.
I, for the most part advise against that. The director and screen play righter will never see or understand the book the way you do.
The movie cannot capture all the details of the written story. Unless you know what is happening in the story you will be a little lost in the movie.
But with a book like Dune I have to agree with you. Herbert in Dune created an entirely new culture only tangentially related to the one we live in. Unless you waded through the novel you have no chance of understanding what is going on. A two or three hour movie has no chance of developing the culture and characters of the 800+ page Dune novel.
I think you’re getting really close: Religious leaders set the expectation for a warlord Messiah, when the Messiah comes, his followers unleash unending war on the universe. But you see the true Jesus; the market for Dune sees religion as the source of all war. Jesus, then, is like Paul Atreides to them: the reluctant Messiah who unleashes untold destruction and war.
Which is too bad, because science fiction should depict a higher level of humanity we all can aspire to. But we all know who doesn't want that...
Dune 2 is watchable, it’s not infected with wokeness, but the original Dune is still my favorite.
It was OK - not great - but wanted to be up to snuff for the 3rd one getting ready to stream this month....
My favorite SF movie is this one:

I had read the novella (Ted Chiangs “The Story of Your Life”) years before and was convinced the plot was far too complex to make into a decent movie.
They proved me wrong—but as with the novella you need to experience it more than once to catch everything that is happening.
The plot changes were mainly made to create a girlboss and denigrate religion.
In the end they massively undersold the main character in the story who was supposed to be somewhat godlike in his powers. Instead he became more of a milquetoast caught between a scheming mommy and girlboss girlfriend.
I was never into DUNE books although I saw plenty of them at the book stores.
Saw the 1984 movie. Had to watch it several times for it to make sense. When shown on Commercial TV they added a 15 minute prologue to try to make sense of it.(Who is on first, What’s on second, and I Don’t Know is on third)
I have no desire to watch the new version.
Yeah, that’s pretty much what happened during the final act, which was really disappointing considering they got most things right before that.
