The new Tom Hanks flick titled “Here” failed to impress and generated just $5 million at the box office.
Adding to the issue is the fact that the Robert Zemeckis-directed film cost $50 million for Miramax to make, according to Deadline. The movie was released by Sony and saw the reunion of the “Forrest Gump” gang by bringing together Hanks, Robin Wright and Eric Roth.
The movie centers around a multi-generation family and takes place in just one location.
Zemeckis has a number of hits under his belt, including “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” “Forrest Gump” and “The Polar Express,” but “Here” has failed to deliver.
Sources told Deadline the movie seemed to struggle from the start, as a number of studios passed on the film, citing the fact that it wouldn’t appeal to broad audiences. Paramount was among those that passed on the opportunity.
Foreign sales largely financed the movie, without a domestic investor.
“I have to give all the credit to (former Miramax Head) Bill Block who had the courage and had the vision to understand the movie and make it,” Zemeckis told Deadline.
“He’s the one guy who had the conviction to do this. That was fantastic. Thank God that he was there to do it.”
Sony rescued the movie by striking a distribution deal based on their relationship with Hanks on “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “A Man Called Otto.” The company is still attempting to recoup their costs, according to Deadline.
“I think the theatrical movie business is in a stressful situation right now,” Zemeckis said.
Hanks is a big lib, boycott him. We don’t need those folks in Hollywood, but they do need us.
It is a stupid title. Just from the searchability factor it is stupid.
Don’t forget that making a movie requires hundreds of people, sometimes thousands, and they are not all ‘libs’, but they do need their jobs to feed their families...............
Boycott Liberal Hollywood. We know who the conservatives are.
His best movie is Bachelor Party.
I have nothing in particular against the people in the film. Tom Hanks has made enough pretty good movies over the years that I’ll give him a tip of the hat. But I get the impression that this film involved some extreme de-aging, and that whole evolution of the technology gives me a bad feeling. How bad was it?
You aren’t alone re Forrest Gump! :)
true, you are correct, but the percentage that would be conservative would be small.
I absolutely hated all three of those dumb flicks. Especially Gump. Zemeckis sucks.
“Zemeckis has a number of hits under his belt, including “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” “Forrest Gump” and “The Polar Express,”
Idiot writer, ‘Polar Express’ was a flop and doesn’t mention ‘Back To The Future’.
Hanks couldn’t buy off the bad pre-release reviews apparently. Having said that a 50 million dollar budget even adding in the additional marketing cost isn’t much. Doesn’t sound there was great expectations from the get go. Not sure why those involved bought into this tripe unless there was real financial shenanigans going on to get people paid a lot of money.
Is the title a tribute to the wife of Zeus, Here (also known as Hera)?
Well I guess I won’t see ‘Here’ here or anywhere. Not there, or elsewhere. Nowhere.
Not in a box with a fox?......................
No, it’s a reference to a piece of ground, starting with the dinosaurs.............
he did an interview with Gayle King. They did an experiment where you leap out of the chair with the joy of a 17 year old. I was waiting to see if someone threw out their back or injured their groin. Gayle could barely do it.
We didn’t see it, but one lady with her two daughters said she wanted her money back it was so bad. The two daughters, mid 20’s just said it sucked................
