The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I had to buy an extension cord this morning for the insert so I hope to hook it up later today. The outlet is behind a big piece of furniture. It’s a desk with a tall hutch that just sits on the desk, not attached. We had a near disaster with it the other day so not looking forward to moving it again for the extension cord.
Our insert does have a heating function so it can take a chill off the air.
This is what we got, but in 25” size:

Glad you liked it.
Be careful! Do you have any of those moving buddy things that you stick under the furniture? Hubby lifts while I slip them under. That might not work for you with your Mama, but maybe??
I guess I missed that you were gimped up. Hope you get back into fighting shape soon.
Two weeks of slothfulness was good for my state of mind, but it wasn’t good for my old bones. I did too much after we got home and I’m suffering for it today. lol
But that’s ok in the big picture of things. Everything that gets done is one more thing that doesn’t need to be done. Even if it hurts.
I agree! Yeah, just stitches in my neck (but a LOT of them!) from having some cancer removed. Makes it hard to turn my head and it itches like crazy as it’s healing.
Also, the change into Fall always poops me out. I’m going 24/7 for weeks on end and then I hit a wall.
I’m a Leo - we NEED sunshine! :)
Today’s precipitation according to the ag research station 8 miles away, 3.22 inches. Need to get my rain gauge set up again.
If you ever happen to grow an Annanas Noire at the same time as the Harvard Square I would be interested to know your thoughts on the taste difference. (The A. Noire was the only tomato that I have ever tasted that was literally sweet.)
Two other heirloom favorites I did not mention were Black from Tula and Cherokee Purple. (Black from Tula produces more fruit for me so I have been planting it instead of Cherokee purple.
Seed Savers....Was this at the Madison store? Or did you day trip out to Decorah? (In my mind I see people outside in the sunshine around picnic tables loaded with trays of sliced tomatoes and basil and bread and potato salad. The ladies are not wearing red poka dot dresses but Columbia and North Face Labled outerwear. (Or Lands End??) Perhaps I am too imaginative.)
When I lived in Chicago there was a place several block from our apartment that sold Goat meat (halal) for $1.29 a pound. Never went in but I did go around the corner and get bagels and cream cheese, or a few doors away for the pistachio baklava.
Now in a Suburban Area, but I had no problem leaving the urban core behind.
The time change is not fun but I understand why they do it.
‘Black From Tula’ is an excellent tomato. Right up there in my Top 10, too.
We had the Tomato Tastings at both places. I worked at the Monroe Street store for 8 years. When they wanted to move the entire operations to the Decorah, IA Farm I was offered a job, but my boys were in their final years of HS so that wasn’t going to happen.
We got a 100K GIFT when Grandma Goldman passed (Yes, of the Goldman-Sachs Empire) and they built the Visitor Center at the farm. I lived and worked there for a few weeks getting it ready to open. That was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work!
And you’re right - mostly ‘sporty’ clothing worn to any of these gatherings. Lands’ End or Duluth Trading Company. North Face people are posers. ;)
Ha! North Face = South Cheek! :)
Calves are so cute .... can’t wait until they start start ‘arriving’ in the pasture across the road, sometime in Jan/Feb. Not cute when they grow up as you said; however, one of the mamas will come to the fence & watch me mow. The cows are all black Angus except for two (out of 20). One has a totally white face so probably part Hereford. The other has some white markings on her face, although it’s still mostly black. She is the one who seems curious about the mowing.
Will Stew get to spend the summer out in the pasture with the other cows like Chuck was able to do?
Yesterday, I finally got to start using the half hog I bought from my niece last fall. Being pasture raised, the meat is definitely more tasty & tender than commercial pork, IMO. I put a picnic roast in the slow cooker & let it go all day, then pulled it for BBQ. I didn’t have time to make a BBQ sauce so I used a commercial one just for dinner - will make the other sauce today.
To go with the BBQ, I made a Mediterranean Potato Salad. If you have baby/fingerling potatoes & you like Mediterranean flavors, this is a tasty recipe & I will make it again - goes great with the BBQ. It does have olives (I used Kalamata), but you can leave them out.
The recipe is from the same site as the ‘elotes’ recipe:

Yes, ‘Stew’ will be on pasture as soon as there is grass next Spring. Ithaca is in there now, and as soon as the weather turns, Beau will bring him back up into the barnyard.
Ithaca is MEAN to the young steers we’ve had in the past, so he keeps them separated.
I hope that you get to go. We intend to skip our beach vacation next year. If nothing gets turned upside down in the meantime we’re planning for Mrs. Augie to retire from the VA system at the end of ‘25 so we’re going to be squeezing the buffalo for the next 12 months.
6” of rain in 30 hours. I’ll be taking the long way in the truck to go vote. I’m sure the two little creeks in the other direction are raging rivers right now.
That looks like a nice potato salad for me to try. I’m always up for changing things around. I like that it doesn’t use mayonnaise, even though I love mayonnaise! I just try to cut calories wherever I can. Trying my best to keep my girlish figure. ;)
Hubby is working towards retirement by mid year of 26, so I hear you. We paid off the house in May, so that’s a help. I love the white sandy beaches of the Panhandle. There’s something about it. Flyovers are the bonus!
I LOVE mayo, but the commercial brands, even if they say ‘olive oil’ or ‘avocado’, are still mostly soybean oil, which is inflammatory. I make my own mayo with straight avocado oil - gets pricey, but sometimes nothing but mayo will do!
Thanks for the kind reply! I am about to start planting my winter garden - stock, pansies, cyclamen, Icelandic poppies, asters and other flowering plants that like the cooler fall and winter weather. Always like to have a lot of color in the yard.
Bon
Would love your recipe! Dad used to make it from scratch but he always had it whipped up before we knew it, so I haven’t a clue about how much of each ingredient he used.
