In Summer/Fall 1984, Mondale was leading Reagan in the polls by a comfortable margin.
But as election day drew near, his numbers started dropping steadily, and Reagan eventually won in a blowout, taking 49 states.
Four summers later, Dukakis was similarly leading GHWB, but then also started dropping like a lead balloon.
One day, a friend asked me: "Do you know what 'Dukakis' actually means in Greek". Thinking this was serious, I replied: "No. What?"
He said: "It means 'Mondale'".
So now it's time to update this old joke! ...
Q: What does "Kamala" actually mean in Hindu?
A: It means "Hillary".
