Russia's butter crisis: Theft spikes as imports plummet
Daily Wrap UK ^ | 10/25/2024 | Katarzyna Staszko

Butter blocks enclosed in plastic boxes with "security chips" - these images are now common in Russian shops. Recently, butter imports have drastically fallen, and product prices have soared. This, in turn, has led Russians to start stealing instead of buying.

For years, Russia was at the forefront of the world's largest food import markets, particularly leading in butter and cheese imports.

Until 2022, butter arrived in Russia from all over the world. However, since the invasion of Ukraine, the situation has changed.

Consequences of the invasion of Ukraine

In 2022, Russia ranked 19th worldwide for butter imports. Over the last two years, imports have dropped tenfold - from 44,000 to 4,400 tonnes.

After Putin attacked Ukraine, Belarus became the only butter supplier to the Russian market. However, it is unable to fully meet the demand, even though its goods account for 15 per cent of all Russian dairy products.

Minsk has also noticed the crisis and decided to profit from it. The local Ministry of Agriculture increased prices for some goods sold in foreign trade contracts with Russia twelve times over the year.

Therefore, Russia chose another route; it started buying butter from "friendly countries." According to their media, these include India and Iran. Kyrgyzstan is also a trade partner in the dairy sector, increasing butter exports to Russia by 34 per cent in the last nine months.

For now, butter remains scarce, and prices have recently risen by 20 per cent. This has led to one issue - Russians have started stealing.

Butter is good for you.

Butter is saturated fat, bad for the heart.
I have’t used it in years.

I really don’t care what Russians or French or Koreans use.
May they drop dead in good health.

Is there some reason Russia can’t produce its own butter?

They can but it costs about 20% more.

Well, you have to buy a cow. Let it mature. Inseminate it. Let it give birth. And then wait until the calf is about to be weaned and keep milking it.

So, it takes about three years. And during that time, they cows cannot be killed and eaten.

So….no Russia wouldn’t be able to make their own butter.

This is my go-to source for all matters regarding food in Russia.

The vlogger is named Russell, he’s Australian and he has been posting vids since pre 2022. Hugely reduces the risk of propaganda.

About 5-6 mins in he strolls past the dairy section and makes some comment about butter being claimed as scarce, but there it is on the shelves.

Other things worth noting . . . earlier in the vid some bald guy about 55 leans over for something. Not sure but that looks like a hearing aid. Maybe bluetooth something.

Rather many military aged men walking around. No scarcity of those in Moscow, though the initial reports were that all of them had fled Russia.

'...no Russia wouldn’t be able to make their own butter.'

I suspect Russia can make their own butter just fine.

You are way behind the times.

I began eating butter again and all kinds of good things transpired. I actually began to lose weight. I’m better at 82 than I was at 75

My tongue was fully pressed into my cheek.

Of course Russia is able t produce some butter. It just seems they cannot produce ENOUGH butter. The Christmas Cookies are going to suck this year.

I weigh 112 and I’m older than you are. Take one prescription drug.
My MD says he’s never seen anyone my age (88) healthier than I am.

I wouldn’t even like butter now, but if you do and you’re doing well on it, more power to you.

Looks like an incoming butter shortage/spiking butter prices here in the United States.

Remember what happened when ukiestoogeusmaximus started in with the egg articles and the flood articles?

Yeah, our egg prices skyrocketed [I paid 3.50 a dozen on Saturday] and we got floods galore.

I imagine a good portion of the Russian soldiers in Ukraine come from Central Asia, rather than from Moscow and St. Petersburg.

butter seems like a good topic for the next week or so while Americans are busy trying to wrestle Marxists to the ground.
