Woman reaching for phone gets stuck upside down in boulders

A young woman spent hours trapped upside down after slipping between two boulders as she tried to retrieve her mobile phone during a hike in Australia.

The woman - named in reports as Matilda Campbell - was walking in New South Wales' Hunter Valley region earlier this month when she fell into the three-metre crevice.

It was the start of a seven-hour ordeal which would see emergency services undertake a "challenging" rescue - including moving several boulders.

And even after managing to winch a 500kg (1,100lb) rock out the way, they still had to work out how to get the woman out of the "S" bend she had found herself in.

"We were all like, how did you get down there - and how are we going to get her out?"

Unbelievably, the rescued woman was left with just minor scratches and bruises, NSW Ambulance said.

She did not, however, manage to retrieve her phone.

Not like the guy who had to cut his arm off with a jack knife in Zion Park a few years back after 27 hours of agony.

Many women are stuck upside down even without reaching for their phone.

Not that it makes any difference, but it was actually 127 hours. Sure hope he had a knife sharpener with him. I don't think I'd have the courage to cut my arm off.

With my claustrophobia they’d carry me away in a strait jacket after such an experience

I’m getting old but I should have remembered that as I read the book and watched the movie. 127 hours is unbelievable.

127 hours is unbelievable.

The really unbelievable part is the self-inflicted dismemberment.

It gives me the willies so badly that I started watching the movie but quit before the part where he got stuck, since I knew what was coming after that. I couldn't even watch a make-believe version of it, much less do it.

Not only the 127 hours man, but Mike Turner who’s leg got pinned under a shifting boulder, and hasn’t found til many years later. He was able to journal for some time while stuck there and it’s very sad but inspiring his emotional journey of hope to be found, realizing he wouldn’t be, anger, acceptance, etc.

It was actually 127 hours of agony and pain for Mr. Aron Ralston, back in 2003.

"Sure hope he had a knife sharpener with him."

EPU;

Since he was in a rock canyon he was surrounded by an extensive sharpener, just not very flat or regular, and probably not a very fine grit.

John Jones died after 28 hours of being stuck upside down in the Nutty Putty Cave in 2009. Numerous efforts to extricate him failed. He had crawled into a 10” by 18” space and gotten stuck upside down, suspended by his feet. They still couldn’t get him out after he died, so his body was sealed inside the mountain.
