Words to the wise. I pulled out two brand new sealed boxes of canning jar lids today. Both had black mold on them. Both the same brand. A brand with the same name as a round object used in sports.
Puck?
Return them. I’ve had excellent luck with “no name” ones I got from Amazon.

Weren’t they a 70’s rock group?
The mold had a brand name?

No, you're thinkin of the band named the Moldy Canning Kids.
Is this yet another company squandering good will for the $$$, or just a fluke?
Are you not allowed to use the ‘B’ word here, when it’s a product sold to the public?
It’s not slander if that was your actual experience.
not a 70’s rock group but a hippie measure of product. a “lid” was how we of that era measured pot. keep pouring pot over a mason jar lid and however much stayed in it was termed “a lid”. the triple beams became a “thing” during the white powder era and ounces were the typical measure from then on. from “dope101”.
Good question. Lemme try it:
If that holds, then yes.
BALLS!
If that holds, then yes.
Hmmn.
Robt questions whether your balls should be held in publick. (er, public).
Then again, loose balls do tend to roll away if not contained or held in in public. ‘Tis a slippery slope you're approaching, my man. A very slippery slope.
Call or write the company. You’ll probably get replacements.
I got around $50 of product replacements recently for contacting the company and explaining the situation.
Premature failure of Ray O Vac batteries with a 10 year warranty.
Hole in a SmartWool sock that isn’t that old. And the hole is near the top of the sock, not in the toes, sole or heel.
Sent them photos of both failure and got vouchers for replacements.
Obviously not the health hazard of canning lids, but good company support and making good on bad products. PS - I didn’t have receipts for either of them and the socks are out of the two year warranty.
Pelota?
Were you storing these moldy canning lids in your dark, damp basement?
It was in a dry place and the mold was in new sealed boxes of lids.
Trying to be nice and not get FR in trouble. I suppose it could happen to any outfit. Moral of story carefully check all your canning gear before use.
Kind of funny...With canning you want to hear “tink”. With welding you hate to hear “tink”.
Well, you certainly wouldn’t want to use these to can your veggies. We canned quite a number of things this summer, tomatoes and salsa, pickles, green beans plus a bunch of frozen corn.
What did the company have to say about it?
And thanks for the warning.
I haven’t had a problem yet.
