Timothy Dolan let a white-tie charity dinner in New York showcase that most uncharitable of men, Donald Trump.
At the annual Al Smith dinner, Dolan suffused the impious Trump in the pious glow of Catholic charities. Dolan looked on with a doting expression as Trump made his usual degrading, scatological comments about his foils, this time cloaked as humor.
“We have someone in the White House who can barely talk, barely put together two coherent sentences, who seems to have mental faculties of a child,” Trump told the New York fat cats. “It’s a person who has nothing going, no intelligence whatsoever. But enough about Kamala Harris.”
Trump also offered this beauty: “I used to think the Democrats were crazy for saying that men have periods. But then I met Tim Walz.” When Trump joked about keeping Doug Emhoff away from nannies, even he admitted it was “too tough.”
As he did in 2016 when he crudely attacked Hillary Clinton as she sat on the dais, Trump added a rancid cloud to what used to be a good-tempered bipartisan roast.
Dolan could have stood up and told Trump “Enough!” We have been longing for that voice of authority who could deliver the Joseph Welch line — “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?” — to our modern Joe McCarthy. It is the church’s job, after all, to teach right from wrong.
Instead of telling Trump he was over the line, Dolan enabled him in his blasphemous effort to cast his campaign as a quasi-religious crusade and himself as a saintly martyr saved by God. The conservative cardinal didn’t care about soiling the legacy of the great Democratic patriot Al Smith.

Classic crybully behavior. They endlessly slander Trump in the worst ways and then blubber when he gives them a taste of their own medicine.

I watched Trump’s interview with Bloomburg News the other day. Trump was talking about how he got countries to pay their debts, making trade deals, etc.
He gave several accounts and his pretty tough with them. “Okay - if your country does that - then we’re going to do THIS.”
He said something like “You know, a lot of people like my policies but they don’t like the messenger. They say I’m too brash. Well, like so and so said, and he’s a progressive - he said that you can’t separate Trump’s policies from the man. That’s true - anyone else couldn’t do the deal the way I do it.”
When Trump wins I imagine he will donate his salary like he did before.
I can't imagine even a liberal reading it and nodding smugly.

My SIL and BIL too. They are snooty rich liberals from Mt. Lebanon, a snooty, rich suburb of Pittsburgh.
I have to drive through “Lebo” to get to my doctor. The Harris Walz Casey yard signs depress me.

Wow, but if Kamala had shown up and given a SNL style bashing of Trump, she would have been praised effusively by all and sundry for her wit and charm. No one would have dared, nor would have desired to, utter a provocative word against Kamala.

Liars. There are plenty of stories about President Trump upon learning about a need, donating directly to the person in need.
Very negative family members of mine keep telling me that Trump stiffed contractors in NYC and was in and out of bankruptcy multiple times. And owns casino’s. And had multiple affairs and divorces.
I’m not sure where they are getting this information about stiffing contractors for work. Anyone else heard this?

Dowd is just another angry spinster with a platform to spew her ill-informed feelings of anything she doesn’t agree with, which is a lot. She lives her life in a bubble of delusion and proselytizes to her readers as to what everyone should feel. but then she wouldn’t be employed by the NYT if she was even marginally normal.

Dowd went to Catholic university but she knows nothing about the Catholic faith.
The church, its curates and prelates, do not judge others.
Trump’s behavior is for God to judge.....not Cardinal Dolan........or Maureen Dowd.
Even the most heinous sinner can be forgiven.....they only have to ask for forgiveness to be saved.
It is in FR “rule.” Mo Dowd was dating Michael Douglas (probably at the behest of Bill Clinton to get her to stop writing about him and Monica Lewinski) when he dumped her and started to date and eventually married CZJ. Posting CZJ’s photo is a way of granting Mo the respect she deserves.
It is right up with using “hugh and series” when appropriate.
