Mudslides, Misinformation and an Urgency to Vote in Western North Carolina

On the first day of early voting, residents of western North Carolina weighed which candidates would most help their yearslong recovery.

Carolyn Burgess, 71, drove on cracked and crooked roads in Black Mountain, N.C., to get to her polling place on Thursday, the state’s first day of early voting. Hurricane Helene had devastated her town, and its 8,500 residents were divided on the government response.

Ms. Burgess agreed with the Republican she was supporting for president: “Trump is right,” she said, standing in line to vote at the Black Mountain Public Library. “FEMA isn’t doing enough.”

Toward the back of the line was Matthew Slauson, 68, a Democrat fed up with former President Donald J. Trump’s false claims about the Biden administration’s handling of the disaster. “Catastrophes around the country are happening more and more,” he said. “That’s why everyone here needs to vote.”

Scarred by the extraordinary amounts of rain that unleashed deadly flooding and road-crushing mudslides last month, the people of western North Carolina are heading into voting booths with a difficult new question in mind: Which candidates will best help them heal and rebuild after one of the worst natural disasters in the United States in decades?

In interviews, most voters who showed up Thursday morning at the library in Black Mountain, a purplish town in left-leaning Buncombe County, said they had long made up their minds about who to support.

Still, many said the federal and state responses to the storm, and the torrent of misinformation about them, had made them even more determined to get their neighbors to a polling place and help ensure their presidential candidate takes North Carolina’s 16 electoral votes.

The political consequences of the storm remain unclear: Christopher A. Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University, conducted...

My bet is Mr. Slauson doesn't actually exist except in the mind of the NYT stenographer.

Not to be ugly, but why post anything from the NYT?

Not to be ugly, but why post anything from the NYT?

Rush Limbaugh dedicated most of his showtime to corporate gaslight press articles. I post them because nobody else does because of precious snowflake bullies who think their poor eyes should not be subject to even the titles of those articles even though lots of other people are interested in them. Since nobody else posts them it's easy to find NYT articles that haven't been posted to FR.

I miss the old days when you could come back to FR every hour and read dozens of new posts. Sometimes nowadays there are no new ones for hours.

If you want to see more articles from different sources you could try posting a few now and then. Looks to me like you only post a few articles per year, but you have plenty of time to whine about what I post.

I’m personally surprised the NYT article was full of the “need” for voters to have “help” voting.

Honestly wasn’t whining. Was a sincere inquiry.

Personally I do no longer read content from the NYT as it seldom adds value to my day, or my perspective. Yet of course you are free to do so.

Fyi, I just recently retired and didn’t have the time devoted to finding articles, but like you enjoy the commentary.

I think you’ll find I do i deed participate in the discourse a Great deal, just haven’t been a content miner like yourself. Thanks for what you do.

Remember, no insult intended here.

I’ll bet Mr. Slauson is just another carpetbagger from Commiefornia or New York City.

I don’t mind seeing articles posted from liberal sources. It’s good to know what the other side is thinking and saying.

My sister is a avid CNN fan and watches nothing else. I mentioned something about Hunter Biden’s laptop and she never heard of it.

She really needs to get some other perspective but her mind is made up and there’s no talking to her.

Echo chambers are not good places for keeping tabs on what’s going on in the world.

That said, leftist tactics and lies increase my BP. It drives me nuts to read the outright lies etc. but we need to know the enemy if we are to effectively counter them.
