There are several factors to take into account
Who doesn't have a beer, a glass of wine or a glass of spirits every so often? Well, experts warn of the danger of doing so too often, as it can lead to short- and long-term problems for the brain, as revealed by neurologist Dr. Richard Restak in his book 'Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind'.
What can happen to our brains?
Alcohol consumption is an ingrained part of social culture, where bars are the main meeting point and beer, wine or spirits come naturally.
However, alcohol consumption can cause problems for the brain: memory loss, mental deterioration or dementia. Neurologist Dr. Richard Restak warns about this in his book 'Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind'.
According to this expert, it is essential to stop drinking alcohol before the age of 70, as from the age of 65 the body loses neurons at an accelerated rate, making it necessary to protect those that remain: 'It is essential to do without alcohol at a stage in life when it is crucial to preserve neurons'.
In addition to memory, Restak warns that this can not only affect our brains, but can go further: 'Confrontation, judgement and learning ability can also be affected. This progressive damage can be dangerous for older people'.
Thus, neurologist Restak invites those over 65 who continue to drink alcohol to think about it, as it can lead to long-term health problems, especially in memory and cognitive functioning, and also to make people who do it repeatedly realise that it can be more serious than it seems in the long run.
I don’t believe DJT ever drank.
He does not make a big deal abut it.
Oops, you are quite right, Ogden Nash.
Anybody who says alcohol is good or bad will not know what they are talking about, because there is no way to know in specific cases. Alcohol profoundly affects the GI biota, killing some microbes, and opening the door for others to dominate the ecosystem.
But that ecosystem is different in everybody, and even if it were the same, people can respond differently to the same microbe down there.
Some people will have alcohol and see it kill back harmful alcohol-sensitive microbes, and they will get sharper, more energetic, less inflamed. And some people will see the opposite, as it kills back microbes which were helping them.
Anyone who gives a one-size-fits-all answer is talking out of their ass.
The only way to know what it does is to do an experiment on yourself, and try it, and try removing it, and see if you are better one way or another. And you may find your best program is to do it for a few days, and take a week off.
There is no way to say without trying it.
I’m painfully honest and the rare poster here who admits when factually incorrect in contrast to many here who refuse to despite proof and never offer any for their own view
And I apologize here
So and I have maybe 6-10 Stellas a year one at a time
Days never
Same with tobacco
He’s like me
One vice lol
Aw that’s precious!
Nothing wrong with having communion daily.
I was taught that “moderation” in all things, particularly vices, works!
So far, so good!
PS
HST, I did quit smoking, cold turkey (well, for the thousandth time), about 12 years ago.
Never quit wanting, but couldn’t handle the after effects!
So, I quit.
Dodged the lung cancer bullet, because I was a “moderate” smoker for 55 years.
So far, so good.
I’m smoking a La Gloria right now
Can’t live forever
I read them all. Last night.
When I used to drink I only drank on weekends.
Trouble was my weekends were always beginning on a Monday.
Ah, could I have your doctors name?
Dr. Richard Restak
I’ll look him up.
Just kidding really. Me and the “Holy Water’’ had to part company years ago.
Certainly nothing wrong with moderation. A nice cold one or a fine wine. It’s to enjoy so to your health.
In my case however the joy quickly turned to Hell.
All the best.
Thank you. And to you.
A good cigar is hard to beat!
I love encouragement. There is always room to refine or relearn what we think we know... But there was no link.
Yes, I was a hod carrier for a 2 man team of masons. I worked my arse off, and they guys were brutal. They revelled in making 20 YO me strain ans sweat. I went from that to working drywall. I drank as much beer as I could afford. In my 20’s and 30’s I felt like a god. There is something inherent in being able to do things physically that others can’t or will not. It just hurts to build the strength and stamina. I could pick up a grown man and move him though.
I worked with a guy who was unassuming, about 6 foot tall, and we were shoving 12’bundles of 5/8’s sheetrock up over a balcony. I was in front, and I would literally throw, he was in the back and he would twist. My end slipped and hit the floor. He got p o’d and lifted it by himself while I gaped at him. It was inhuman. The same guy would unload a semi-in apartments by himself, so he didn’t have to split the $5 per thousand sq ft we got paid. A good day was 50K apts we would do 75K.
