After a tough night of filming in Texas, Will Ferrell broke down in tears while filming alongside his friend Harper Steele for their new Netflix documentary, "Will & Harper."
The documentary, which dropped Sept. 27 on Netflix, features longtime "Saturday Night Live" pals Ferrell and Steele as they travel across the country to reintroduce Steele to America after she came out as a trans woman.
The pair visited Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo to compete in the restaurant's famed 72-ounce steak eating contest, for which the competitors were placed on a stage in front of a gathering audience. As more people began to crowd around the duo to take photos, Ferrell said he began to feel uncomfortable.
"As much as I’ve been in a fishbowl in various times in my life," he said while in the restaurant, "this trumps all of it."
In a clip shared to Facebook in March 2023 while Ferrell and Steele were filming, restaurant workers seemed to give the duo a warm welcome and addressed Steele using her correct pronouns.
According to the film, however, restaurant patrons and TikTok users didn't extend the same Southern kindness. The crowd groaned and went silent when Steele and Ferrell raised a toast to trans rights in an unaired scene, and after the duo left the restaurant, the film depicted a series of transphobic social media posts directed at Steele. The two discussed the ordeal in the car the following day.
"The room started to feel very... wrong to me," Steele said. "I was feeling a little like my trans-ness was on display, I guess. And suddenly, that sort of made me feel... not great."
Big Texan Steak Ranch did not respond to an Express-News request for comment.
When Ferrell unpacked how he felt about those moments, he began to cry. "The saddest part for me is, uh... I just feel... I feel like I let you down in that moment," he said as Steele comforted him. "I was like, 'Oh, s***, We gotta worry about Harper's safety.' You know, like what... That’s where I just... I feel like I... Yeah."
In an interview with The Independent, Ferrell commented on why he believes people may feel threatened by people who identify as trans.
"Harper is finally... her. She’s finally who she was always meant to be," Ferrell said. "Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself."
Normal people tend to be a little put off by abnormal. 😏
Pandering to the delusions of the seriously mentally ill does nothing to help them; in fact, the pandering is arguably cruel. You’re not a cruel person, are you Mr. Ferrell, et al.?
“The room started to feel very... wrong to me,” Steele said. “I was feeling a little like my trans-ness was on display, I guess. And suddenly, that sort of made me feel... not great.”
He’s threatened by reality and wants to tell you about it.
That may have been the one I found him amusing in. But like another poster stated, that schtick gets old. It is no wonder the Left loves him-they are stuck in a perpetual immature adolescence and can relate to it.
He is a one trick pony, for sure.
Mean Social media posts. That’s it? The HORROR! These clowns were deliberately provocative & sought out what they thought was the most likely place to get pushback AND THEN interrupted everyone else’s dinner with their clown show. But they are the victims. Right!
They just aren’t “special” anymore. If one were to believe media, commercials, weekly broadcast shows etc, at least half the population is gay, trans or one of a hundred other genders, and the other half are in interracial relationships. What’s to celebrate? Perverts like these two won… whoop de doo!!! No “special” nuthin’ for them anymore.
It is not my job to treat your trans decision as super special and cheer it !
Well I am sure the happy couple enjoyed the pleasures of one another while filming the documentary.
Not even at closing time with 2 fifths in me.
Because they don't stop there, Will. They announce it in a church-going area of the country and expect applause. And they cram it down the necks of schoolchildren across the country, whose parents are put on a domestic terrorist watchlist by the FBI/DOJ if they object to their tiny kids being sexualized.
Duh!
🤢🤮
Some things should remain private. Psychological issues shouldn’t be shared with the public, Will.
It’s threatening to me if I have to share a restroom with a grown man capable of becoming physically aroused.
It’s why I always make sure I have a means of self-defense - and I use the single-stall staff bathroom at work. The door locks.
uhhh, wasn't that the point of your exercise?
Self mutilation, castration, then some kind of practicing sexual freak - yes, that should win over middle America.
They have a mental illness and need to be treated.
As it was for hundreds of years until last year.
Ferrell should pay attention to his projections upon people who operate in reality. A transwoman is a man who wants to be and thinks he is a woman. He is not allowed in women’s private spaces, like locker rooms in some states. I can accept a transwoman, but he ain’t a woman. Ferrell projects his own failings upon people who live in reality.
LOL!
I would too have booed. Get a room, celebrate by yourselves. I WILL NOT PARTICIPATE. I have a Nephew, had surgery, I am polite, but I still call him by his birth name and that he is a male. I get corrected, I reply with a quick, I don’t lie.
You have to admit, it’s clever how he did his hair to disguise the male pattern baldness in front.
