Tequila is the most popular agave spirit by far and the category has surpassed whiskey sales in the U.S. to become the nation’s second best-selling spirit behind only vodka. Tequila also powers America’s most popular cocktail: the margarita. But as much as I love tequila, and I am definitely a fan, of late I’ve been increasingly drawn to other Mexican spirits including Bacanora, another type of mezcal, and sotol, a separate but somewhat similar tasting category of Mexican spirit.

Tequila is Mexicos greatest gift to mankind.
Um. No. No thank you. Tequila is just fine.
Wasting away in Bacanoraville?
I tried mezcal for the first time a couple of months ago. What a fascinating beverage, very smokey!
Kah. Smooth...
During the Urban Cowboy movie days, I used to go to Mexico and get some tequila with a worm in it for less than $2 a bottle and then sell it for over $25 per bottle when I was back at the university. Paid for my trip, a few meals, and I got to see family.
Tequila tastes like vomit going down my throat, when it comes back up.....I don’t want to talk about it.
When I worked in Sonora many years ago, once in a while someone would bring around a bottle of local bacanora. I didn’t like it much, but then I don’t care for tequila either.
I am not a liquor drinker at all (beer is usually it for me), but I did fall in love with Mezcal when I lived in Oaxaca for a bit. That smokey taste is something I could grow to enjoy especially when lime is prominent.
I’m allergic to tequila, it makes me break out in handcuffs.
LOL
Ha! There was one particular trip back from Ensenada when I came nearer than intended to resembling that remark, but I lucked out. That was long before I stopped all ETOH and non-OTC drugs entirely.
Tequila is the only liquor that gives me a horrible hangover the next day. Not fun. Whiskey or bourbon on the other hand, all night long and good to go the next day. Kinda’ weird. Also, cannot stand the taste of beer and I have tried a lot of them. Cannot do it.
Spent some time in Oaxaca myself. My late in laws were missionaries in Mitla
