Florida officials ask Hurricane Helene evacuation hold-outs to ink names and DOBs on arms in case their bodies need to be ID’d

Florida authorities are asking residents refusing to evacuate from the path of the deadly Hurricane Helene to ink personal information on their arms and legs in case their bodies need to be identified after the Category 4 storm passes.

“If you or someone you know chose not to evacuate, PLEASE write your, Name, birthday and important information on your arm or leg in A PERMANENT MARKER so that you can be identified and family notified,” the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office wrote on its Facebook page ahead of Helene’s landfall Thursday.

Taylor County sits square in the path of the storm’s projected landfall on Florida’s Big Bend, where the panhandle meets the peninsula.

The hurricane is due to land early Thursday night — bringing with it what experts have called a possibly “unsurvivable” storm surge of up to 20 feet.

Officials have ordered an evacuation of the region, yet some residents have resisted.

Trying to head off the almost inevitable casualties and rescue operations to come, Taylor County officials are asking potential victims of the storm to help them by sending police their basic information should they choose to say put.

“We ask that you kindly provide the following information so Search and Rescue teams can prioritize these locations: Is the residence inland or on the coastline? Full address of the residence.”

The sheriff’s office also asked for the number of people and animals present at the homes, their names, contact information, and “additional information, such as a recent photograph of the individual(s), disabilities, special requirements.”

I spent the third night of my honeymoon in a hotel on the beach in St. Thomas enduring Cat 5 Hurricane Hugo. When I found out it was coming, I was actually kind of excited. I thought it would be a great adventure. There was no way to leave the island, so we just relaxed and partied in anticipation. Let me tell you, eight hours of 150 mph unrelenting wind with your hotel swaying back and forth is no fun. I would never do that again if I had the choice. (Unfortunately, the marriage wasn’t much better.)

Most of the storms of late hitting Florida have been in areas of low populations. Obviously, Helene into Jacksonville, Miami or larger metro areas will create massive damages. I wouldn’t base a view on something via a webcam.

”… get your head between your legs so that you can kiss your a$$ goodbye.…”

.

I always heard that THAT is what you do in case of impending nuclear war…

I guess they taught me wrong in those elementary school (5th grade) nuclear drills all of those decades ago…

I marked my name and DOB on my forehead with a permanent marker. And then I realized that I was not in the storm path.

All students received dog tags at our elementary school in NW FL around the time of the Cuban missle crisis. All the boys thought it was cool to have them, parents probably weren’t as thrilled. I think school officials had them stored away just in case, and figured it was a good time to hand them out.

The third was in Florida on Interstate 4 when one of those huge exit signs fell on a car. Instant zot.

You never know. It might change direction.

Better safe than sorry but I don’t recommend getting it tattooed there at this time.

The Atlanta weather people hyped this storm til people were hysterical. I went to bed at midnight and woke up at 7:00 AM and it was over and we didn’t even bet debris in the yard.

You would think that it is the first time Authorities have said this. It is not. It has been used before for other storms.

Someone I know lives just outside the airport there. He said the same thing. Not even a bad thunderstorm really.

They’d do better to “strongly advise” people to leave their homes rather than issue “mandatory” evacuation orders.
