Malcolm Gladwell in his book "The Outliers" states that the reason Asian kids consistently outperform western kids in international math tests is because of the cultural attitude these kids have towards solving a math problem, or any task that requires patience and effort for a long period of time.
In China and other Asian cultures, there is a logical pattern to learning math based on a confidence and expectation that if we apply enough effort the problem is solvable while in the West, kids believe their ability is innate and can't be changed or influenced.
Malcolm's theory is that the reason for this difference in attitude has to do with the historical agriculture practices in both cultures, where the rice growing Asian culture had a different lifestyle for thousands of years that required consistent hard work which translates in the today's attitude of their kids when trying to solve a math problem.

It’s possible the teachers in Asia either are smarter or have a better understanding of math.
Many college students, even graduate students, these days do not even understand decimals. When given two decimals, 0.1 and 0.09 they cannot tell you which is smaller. Many were taught that “everything works backwards to the right of the decimal point.”
I hate to tell you, I know of one medical student who had zero understanding of decimals.
Why do Asian kids outperform Western) American kids in math? Can't include European kids...they actually have functional, efficient and demanding educational systems.
Puberty? Isn’t that largely a function of weight, at least for menarche, or is it other measure like height, etc. i think the character written languages would be part of it. It must be a lot more difficult to learn to write in those languages.

Yeah that’s a funny one — the Great Works… a culmination of Arab plundering of fallen nations. BTW, it was the Hindus that promoted 1-9 to 0-9 which was an amazing abstraction of zero/nothing. Hard to imagine math without it.

They teach patience. In the west we allow our kids to have the attention span of millisecond. In fact, everything we expose them to is a distraction. It’s no wonder we have so many being driven into mental illness.

I have noticed the same, every single African immigrant I have ever met was highly educated and a fine person. These were true immigrants and not refugees ect.

yes and the higher level of thinking the schools are requiring of the primary level children is not developmentally appropriate.

This makes sense. It might also explain why Black American children tend to perform poorly. Many school children groan at the word math. I did. Who wants to memorize multiplication tables? But I found higher math fascinating.
