Why do Asian kids outperform Western kids in math?
YouTube ^ | Book published in 2008 | Malcolm Gladwell

Posted on 09/21/2024 7:48:21 AM PDT by grundle

Malcolm Gladwell in his book "The Outliers" states that the reason Asian kids consistently outperform western kids in international math tests is because of the cultural attitude these kids have towards solving a math problem, or any task that requires patience and effort for a long period of time.

In China and other Asian cultures, there is a logical pattern to learning math based on a confidence and expectation that if we apply enough effort the problem is solvable while in the West, kids believe their ability is innate and can't be changed or influenced.

Malcolm's theory is that the reason for this difference in attitude has to do with the historical agriculture practices in both cultures, where the rice growing Asian culture had a different lifestyle for thousands of years that required consistent hard work which translates in the today's attitude of their kids when trying to solve a math problem.

It’s really simple - Asian kids, at least in Asia DO NOT have calculators thrown in their faces in math class. And when they complain “Math is hard”, they get told “tough shit, keep working”. US kids get a whole army of ‘social workers’ at their disposal once they complain about, well, anything.

#2: "Parenting"

Bingo! Asians excel at anything which requires discipline and practice like math and music. The parents are instrumental in seeing that their kids do their homework. And Asian kids don't have Homer Simpson for a dad.

Yep. It’s that simple. I taught math and science at an urban school for years. Asian kids were maybe 5% of the population.

The Asian parents all had a rule: Homework was a group effort. And the older kids couldn’t start their homework until the younger ones had successfully completed theirs.

Because they aren’t being I doctrinated with lgbtq nonsense and being scolded constantly for their “white privilege” or in this case “brown privilege” and are actually taught math?

Math is the best way to train your brain how to think.

Now you know why so many kids in our education system wind up becoming Democrats.

I’d be willing to bet their brains mature earlier. Do our top 10% match their top 10%?

Because they actually use them.

Because they are focused on math and not pronouns?

But I should also point out there is a much higher suicide rate in Asian countries, because the pressure put on kids is overwhelming.

There has to be some middle ground.

Because mom and dad actually work with them when they’re toddlers, reading to them and teaching them to count and “take away”?

“Math is the best way to train your brain how to think.”

I’ve been saying that for years!

Completely agree. We approach reading with the attitude that all kids can learn to read well, but for some reason with math we just throw up our hands and say “they’re just not a math person”.

One of the pitfalls is the way the schools now attempt to teach math. The goal appears to be having elementary school students in frist, second, third grade achieve the kind of higher understanding of math that a math major might have, which is something 99% of students will never need. In the past, practicing the basics to the point of automaticity was how American students were taught arithmetic and math, so that when algebra on up was taught, the students did not have to think about the building blocks that the higher math skills are built upon. They just knew.

But the owners of this country don’t want people who can think for themselves, do they?
