A small Pennsylvania town is up in arms over a proposal to turn an abandoned Civil War-era school into a shelter for hundreds of migrant families — with residents and lawmakers vowing to put a stop to the “foreign invasion.”
News of the plan to turn the former Scotland School for Veterans Children building in Franklin County into a migrant shelter surfaced publicly this week after the owners of the sprawling property recently started making inquiries about its potential usage, local officials said.
The Greene Township Board of Supervisors said a representative from USA Up Star, an Indiana-based disaster response company that currently owns the 185-acre property, had reached out to them last month to ask if local zoning laws allowed for the campus to be converted into a shelter.
The company said the location, which was most recently a summer camp, would be used as a “shelter for families seeking refuge” in the US and that they’d be “working closely” with the federal government on the potential project.
The board quickly denied the request, saying current zoning requirements and land use regulations prohibited such a use for the campus.
USA Up Star, however, can still lodge an appeal on the board’s decision, according to local officials.
It wasn’t immediately clear, though, if the company intends to fight the ruling.
Still, the developments sparked immediate outrage with furious locals packing the township’s board meeting on Tuesday to voice their objections over the apparent push to shelter migrants in their community.
“Our concern is that we have no idea who these people are. They’re unvetted,” one local, Sue McPhail, said during the meeting, according to WGAL.

Whereas, TRUMP’S PLAN is to bring back jobs to the USA so the workers have extra money to make structures like this a museum or for other civic uses.

In a zoning dispute, you never, ever base your opposition on the types of people who will be living in the proposed housing, patronizing the proposed business, attending events at the proposed institution, etc. This is a sure path to ending up on the losing end of a civil rights lawsuit.
Your opposition should be based on objective standards that would apply REGARDLESS OF WHO IS USING THE PROPERTY. The streets can’t handle the traffic. The sewer system was designed for a day camp, not hundreds of permanent residents. The school system can’t accommodate X more students. The proposed buildings do not fit the historical character of the neighborhood. Etc., etc.

Don’t you just love how these politicians and our “watch dogs of democracy” (AKA news media) keep these deals silent and then spring it on the people as a feat completed. You just know there’s big money in it for them.
All I can say is: Save the Kitties! (along with saving our Republic, our Constitution and our civil society).
It’s almost like the governors and mayors have been told “These people are coming whether you like it or not, and they’re going to get voting rights. Do you want them to vote FOR you, or AGAINST you? Let your actions send a message to them.”
This is the only reason I can think of for all the states to be so willing to do whatever they can to accommodate them.
This place was first built for children of Civil War Veterans in 1894.Why is it not on a list of Historic Places.
I’m seeing three Greene Townships in PA. (Greene, Pike, and Franklin Counties). The latter has 18K+. Not sure of their politics, but I’d wager it’s a red area being punished for the way Philly/Pittsburgh vote.
I know this one is in Franklin County. Waynesboro is located there. I’m thinking this will reverberate throughout PA. Couldn’t come at a worse time for Democ 🐀 🐀 . 😃
