MAGA Is Nothing Without Trump
The New York Times ^ | Sept. 8, 2024, 6:00 a.m. ET | David French

I spent the Labor Day weekend in Chicago, America’s greatest summer city. Sunday afternoon in particular was glorious. The temperatures were moderate, the skies were clear and the tourist sections of the city were teeming with happy Pearl Jam fans who’d just attended Saturday’s concert at Wrigley Field. My wife and I took our grandchildren to Navy Pier to visit the Chicago Children’s Museum, and as we walked back toward Michigan Avenue we saw the same sight we see every time we visit Chicago — an impressive, towering skyscraper with the name “Trump” emblazoned in immense letters across the building’s facade.

I was reminded once again that Donald Trump is a singular figure in American politics. There is no one like him, and that means that no one can replace him. While it’s always perilous to make predictions about American politics — or anything else about the future — here’s one that I’m almost certain is correct: If Donald Trump loses in 2024, MAGA will fade. He is the irreplaceable key to its success.

Last month, I wrote a column that generated intense blowback on the right because I argued that as a pro-life conservative I am voting for Kamala Harris. That was controversial enough, but what really seemed to make people angry was one of my stated motivations: that I am voting for Harris to try to save conservatism from MAGA. Defeating Trump, I said, gives conservative Americans a chance to “build something decent from the ruins of a party that was once a force for genuine good in American life.”

The MAGA response was, in essence, you’re fooling yourself. Trump or no Trump, we own the party now.

Or maybe they were pretending to be conservative in the first place. It’s not hard to do if you’re from a red state like Oklahoma or Kentucky. Just a few buzzwords and a lame attempt at introducing legislation that goes nowhere can get you into the MAGA circle.

For instance, Pence did it when he latched onto the Tea Party. He was actually at the 9/12 rally in 2009, standing at the top of the stairs at the FBI metro stop handing out Tea Party cards with his name on them. Our eyes locked for a second as he handed me his card and I mumbled “thank you.” I came away thinking “he’s the real deal, he’s one of us!” He even fooled me and I’ve been a political cynic for the last 20 yrs. 🫤

2000, 2004, tons of FReepers supported Cheney and Bush. Lots of voters will always vote R, for some reason they think it matters. It doesn’t, R’s and D’s are merely fighting over the scraps of America. The problems we face were set in motion decades ago by Republicans and Democrats.
There is no going back.

MAGA in your heart and in your deeds. Trump gave it a name.

He had better hope and pray Trump wins. Because if he does we will retain faith that it is possible to work within the system.

Once that hope fails you are going to have a bunch of people who do not just feel but KNOW there is no reason to try to be civilized about the matter any more.

And at that point.....

Vance did not bring any additional voters to Trump.

You are wrong.

Vance is bringing the people that everyone over looks. The "hillbillies". Even though some of them live in cities. Not the welfare poor. The working poor. For the first time in a long time someone on the national stage is seeing them.

They want their children to be able to go to schools will give them a better education then they had. They want to be able to heat their houses and put food on the table. They would like to have an honest shot at climbing the ladder rather then having it kicked away in favor of other people because they are "privileged".

They are the Invisible men.

They are not switching parties. These are people who never voted at all. These are truly new voters.

Agreed. JD Vance rings a bell that these people clearly hear.

MAGA is nothing about Trump.
It is about returning America back to the voters and removing power from DC and the MSM

Yep.

There is a tendency, even here on FR to equate "poor" to "welfare queen". That is because those are the people they see in the media.

These are not those people.

“I was maga before trump even showed up in 2015”

Yep

Many MAGAdons had been looking for leaders like Our PDJT, The GOAT since RWR left the scene. McRomBush bots never filled the bill.
Cheney The War Pig’s support for KamelToe highlights that yawning chasm.

Like RWR was in his day, PDJT is the man for this moment.

In time, other Patriots will rise.

He makes a good point, though.

Trump needs to cultivate the next generation of MAGA leadership.

Sigh. Donald Trump was a result of a growing MAGA movement (called Tea Party or other names) in the Republican party.

Regular Republicans finally figured out that their party despised them and lied to them every election cycle about their values and policy goals.

Donald Trump crystallized that into a nameable movement. Maybe it will acquire another name in the future, but America First is here to stay.

In 2028, the Bushes, Cheneys, and Haleys will try to take the party back to the good old days and marginalize 80% of the people who vote for them. They despise us but they need our votes for them to gain power and that makes them despise us even more.

Possible replacement, also non politician: Elon Musk. Don’t laugh. In 2012 who would have thhought Trump would be the leader of Republican Party?

Like Trump, he is also rich. Very very rich.
