MAGA Is Nothing Without Trump
The New York Times ^ | Sept. 8, 2024, 6:00 a.m. ET | David French

I spent the Labor Day weekend in Chicago, America’s greatest summer city. Sunday afternoon in particular was glorious. The temperatures were moderate, the skies were clear and the tourist sections of the city were teeming with happy Pearl Jam fans who’d just attended Saturday’s concert at Wrigley Field. My wife and I took our grandchildren to Navy Pier to visit the Chicago Children’s Museum, and as we walked back toward Michigan Avenue we saw the same sight we see every time we visit Chicago — an impressive, towering skyscraper with the name “Trump” emblazoned in immense letters across the building’s facade.

I was reminded once again that Donald Trump is a singular figure in American politics. There is no one like him, and that means that no one can replace him. While it’s always perilous to make predictions about American politics — or anything else about the future — here’s one that I’m almost certain is correct: If Donald Trump loses in 2024, MAGA will fade. He is the irreplaceable key to its success.

Last month, I wrote a column that generated intense blowback on the right because I argued that as a pro-life conservative I am voting for Kamala Harris. That was controversial enough, but what really seemed to make people angry was one of my stated motivations: that I am voting for Harris to try to save conservatism from MAGA. Defeating Trump, I said, gives conservative Americans a chance to “build something decent from the ruins of a party that was once a force for genuine good in American life.”

The MAGA response was, in essence, you’re fooling yourself. Trump or no Trump, we own the party now.

David thinks if the Swamp can succeed at assassinating Trump we will go away.

He’s not wrong - who’s gonna pick up the ball after Trump?

Romney? Cheney? Ryan? Bushies? All these fake patriots who were always working with the deep state to sell out America?

Meanwhile the DNC has been completely subjugated and will obviously vote for the puppet candidate dangled in front of them and will happily believe their lies just so they won’t be called racist!

He's absolutely wrong. The GOP may fall into the hands of the milk-sops David French and Bill Kristol love, but if it does it has no future at all, and a populist party will rise to sweep it aside.

As to who - Vance and DeSantis are both populists and proven conservatives. I know some of the pearl-clutchers around here will gasp at the thought of any "non Judeo-Christian" but I'd vote for Vivek as well.

At this point in our history you are correct, nobody it’s going to take Trump’s place.

Like Trump said long ago after he came down the escalator in 2015, “”I’m rich, really really rich, they can’t bribe me””.

That's a fair question. Who will be Trump's MAGA successor? Vance? He needs to groom someone. He ain't getting any younger. There's a good chance this will be the last election where he's on the ticket (though I think if he loses, there's greater than 50/50 odds he's the '28 GOP nominee).

Wrong. MAGA is the evolved Tea Party. Movements based on truth and substance only grow.

Many of us here were Tea Party Patriots - the MAGA before MAGA - with Sarah Palin as one of the Tea Party leaders.

Exacly, our nation and freedom itself are hanging by a thread...and that thread is attached to Trump.

What they truly fear is J.D. Vance.

Young, dynamic and popular with common people... He’s man enough to admit when he’s wrong, like he did when he came around to supporting Trump instead of apposing him.

Churchill started as Conservative for four years... Joined the Liberals for 20 years, and then returned to the Conservative party. People who blindly support one party or one person over another are fools.

Vance is his own man, and after he’s VP... He’s their biggest fear. 12 consecutive years of Republican rule will drive Liberals to God knows what.

Here’s my shot at an analogy. Tornado weather systems are caused by a large low-pressure area adjacent to a high-pressure area. Along the boundary tornados form. There’s a huge high pressure MAGA centered in the country, and it is rubbing up against a low pressure “trans-zone.” Political tornadoes form. One of them is named Trump. But if that one petters out, another will form. The cause is not the tornado or the man, it’s the huge pressure zones.
