A popular hiking trail in Hawaii had to close this week after 24 hikers became sick from what is believed to be norovirus — an outbreak many blamed on illegal squatters defecating along the remote path.
A portion of the Kalalau Trail on the Kalalau section of the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park on the island of Kauai was shuttered for seven days beginning Sept. 4, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources posted on Facebook this week.
The DOH received reports of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea from hikers who had been on the 11-mile trail, which runs from Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach, from as early as Aug. 14.
So far, none have been hospitalized.
“This is a very concerning and rare occurrence, magnified by the extreme remote nature of the Kalalau Valley,” administrator of the DLNR’s Division of State Parks, Curt Cottrell, said in the post.
“We appreciate the DOH guidance in helping manage and mitigate this isolated outbreak in the hope no one else is exposed or gets sick.”
Some think the trail should be closed for a longer amount of time and blame illegal squatters and unsanitary conditions there for the spread of the disease — and have expressed their concerns via comments on the DLNR’s Facebook post.
“Norovirus can remain in feces for over two weeks after the virus has been passed,” wrote Alex Soule.
“The park needs to be closed for at least a month after all the illegal squatters [are] removed in order for the valley to be safe to visit. Unsanitary living conditions perpetuated by those who illegally occupy the valley caused this and it won’t end until they’re gone and the campground is cleaned.”

What is it about progressive governments and human waste everywhere?
I’m surprised no one is building them a million dollar outhouse.
Squatters? You mean there are no proper toilets? Oh my!
They do seem to have a certain affinity for things fecal, including their arguments.
I’ve met many people that squat in the bottom of that canyon.
There are no facilities.
Its very isolation is its attraction.
I think cops and cleanup crews come in from the ocean, because it is such a nasty hike to and from the top.
Most hikers know if you take a dump. dig a hole, crap in it, then bury your feces, and the paper if used.
They must be tourists that don’t know better.
They certainly aren’t locals or experienced hikers
in primative areas.
Check what I just said. I was thinking Waimea canyon trail.
This Kalalau Trail is much better maintained and watched.
I live on the Big island. So forgive my geographic error.
My comment is valid for Waimea canyon.
They have plenty of food. I've been to Hawaii and I've hiked that trail in Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park. It used to be occupied until the 1940s by native Hawaiians and there are still many fruit trees growing wild on that coast. The land is very fertile and they will have no problem feeding themselves and growing marijuana. And there is plenty of fish in the sea for protein. If I was a bum and had nowhere to go that would be a place I would go.
That being said, if Hawaii ever gets cut off for a few months they're gonna be eating one another. It will be haole for dinner.
“What is it about progressive governments and human waste everywhere?”
The only difference is in appearance.
It’s because they’re just criminals.
The most basic of services from local government— garbage, sewers, roads, crime are just symptoms of the fact they don’t do abythigg by but steal.
Hawaii used to be a great place to visit. I’ve been there numerous times from the mid 80s till several years ago on business and what a change. Homeless encampments everywhere along with trash... your basic liberal shxthole.
I guess all the cruise haters now are going to boycott the HI “Petri dish”.
I can’t even imagine how awful HI must’ve become since we left there in the ‘90s. It was Heavenly.
Nelson: “HA, HA “
Kauai charges haoles above and beyond their expensive flights and expensive accomodations but now not for poop on the trails
(trails you have to pay to go on)
Don’t be too sure, I live right next to Parker Ranch, the country’s second or third largest privately owned cattle ranch in America. We have lots of cattle, pig, and goat ranches nearby.
Plus good hunting. Wild Goat, sheep, pig, turkey and chickens et al, running everywhere.
There are lots of farms in the area also.
The island bigger than Connecticut and only 200,000 year round residents, nobody will go hungry here.
We are not the Hawaii you see on the TV shows.
Sure, reward the squatters and penalize everyone else.
The correct solution is to get rid of the squatters from the very start.
DOH!
Squatters gotta squat.
Not only do bears shit in the woods...
It’s a crappy trail....
And they don’t have enough sense to dig a hole, poop, and cover it up. Even the Bible told the Israelis fleeing from Egypt to cover up their poop.
