Trump-Vance Is Making Something Very Clear About Trumpism
The New York Times ^ | Sept. 5, 2024, 5:02 a.m. ET | Noah Millman

Since his selection as Donald Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance has performed poorly on most metrics by which we judge vice-presidential nominees. He has never been noted for his charisma, and his attacks and insults have rendered him exceptionally unpopular.

But he was not picked for traditional political reasons, like electoral strength in a swing state or being the ambassador to a needed voting bloc. It may be hard to recall after weeks of talk about “cat ladies,” but Mr. Vance, as much as virtually anyone else in Mr. Trump’s orbit, has tried to put ideological and policy meat on the MAGA bones. Mr. Vance was positioned to be MAGA’s overseer of the so-called deep state, the one who would make sure that, this time around, things would really change. Whether or not he became Mr. Trump’s heir, he would make sure that there would be a Trumpism beyond Mr. Trump.

But can there be a Trumpism beyond Mr. Trump? The idea — which appeals to many on the right who agree with the Trumpist turn on immigration, trade and foreign policy but also see Mr. Trump’s unfitness for office — may be an impossible dream in principle and not only because of Mr. Trump’s practical inescapability.

Mr. Trump’s persona has been the essence of his appeal — his policies matter more for the way they create and sustain that persona than they do for their substantive impact. It is intimately bound up with his anti-institutional posturing, his claim to be the one man who can defeat the system. That is a very difficult thing to institutionalize or even to hand off to a successor.

The mental gymnastics these “journalists” do is comically delicious to watch!

"We" being the folks at the NY Times.

"Performed poorly on most metrics by which" the folks at the NY Times "judge vice-presidential nominees" - that equates to someone I'll cast a vote for. The last thing I want is any creature the NY Times likes.

Vance is doing something that most people are missing even here on FR. Because most people on FR are not hardscrabble working poor.

And what he is doing is inviting them to the dance.

These are people who both parties have ignored.

No one seems to care that the schools they attended leave them poorly educated or that there are no "set aside" places for them in higher education. In fact they are often told that they are "privileged" and so their place will be given to another.

They are blue collar and pink collar workers who will never get their foot in the door either because of they are not "diverse" enough or because those jobs require college degrees despite being something a sixth grader could do.

This could provide a needed shift because it is not that these people vote democrat, it is that they don't vote at all.

Unless Trump and the GOP can do something about the Civil Service Act the bureaucracy will simply wait them out.

There is a problem related to the bureaucracy that might not be fixable. That is that few conservatives seek careers in government bureaucracies. I've read that the Justice Department is made up of 80 - 85% registered Democrats. I expect Democrats are a significant majority in every federal bureaucracy.

We'll have to have some tough department heads and other appointees to get the bureaucracies to implement conservative policies. We need only recall how the D of J and FBI supported the lies about Hunter's laptop prior to the 2020 election to see that problem.

The system is going to be very unhappy when the powers-that-be realize they are not going to get control back over the GOP unless they are willing to destroy the party and chase off its voters to a new replacement party. We are the populist, anti-establishment, anti-globalist party now.

The system has been going insane over the idea that it no longer controls both parties and that elections and the will of the people actually matter for a change. They’ve been focusing their ire and hysteria against Trump, but they don’t seem to realize it’s too late for them. The conservative populist movement was already there under the surface in the party and has grown far beyond Donald Trump at this point.

This is just narrative building from the NYT. The only reason that Vance is less popular than he should be is the non-stop onslaught against him from the propaganda media. This article is another example of that onslaught meant to create a new reality.

Vance is the embodiment of the American Dream, extremely bright, and runs circles around the hostile propaganda media. The left and the establishment and their media are afraid of him, so they have been trying to smoother his national political career in the cradle.

I expect Democrats are a significant majority in every federal bureaucracy.

The reason is job security, as most of them know they are unemployable in private industry.

“ Mr. Trump’s persona has been the essence of his appeal ”

Actually his policies are.

It is the left that follows the cult of personality and this writer is projecting.

Nope. No bias there.

Coming from the NYT, I couldn't imagine a better endorsement.

The more the left hates someone and bad mouths them, the better they are.

Only the left thinks the presidency is a popularity contest.

They just don’t get it.

Yep. More leftist advocacy from a fake news source.

I am a believer in J.D. Vance. I may not agree with him on every single thing he has said or done, but when he speaks out, he is aggressive, unafraid, and doesn’t have to lie or deceive to make his point.

It's very true...they just left off part of the statement:

He has never been noted for his charisma, and his attacks and insults have rendered him exceptionally unpopular AMONG hard core leftists.

I am about halfway through the evil Project 2025 report, and it discusses how to address the bloated administrative state, and doesn’t pull punches on it either.

I saw a dumbass Liberal/Leftist at a State Fair last week wearing a “Fight Project 2025” t-shirt...he looked clean-cut, maybe mid-Sixties, and I immediately assessed him as someone who would sign onto something wholeheartedly 100% simply because some other Leftist told him it was bad.

I am 99.5% certain he has never even looked at it or read a word of it.

I don’t care if he is an actual astrophysicist...Leftists leave their brain behind when it comes to promoting ideology.

The pure as the driven snow NYT is making up derogatory terms like “Trumpism” (rhymes with Nazism - what a coincidence!)

Are there any articles with headlights about Kamalaism? What about Harrisism?

The term “New York Slimes” is SO accurate.
