While off the Japanese island of Chichijima on this day in history on Sept. 2, 1944, then-future President George H.W. Bush was the only survivor after his aircraft was shot down by enemy fire, according to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.

At the time, Lt. Junior Grade George Bush was a pilot with Torpedo Squadron Fifty-One (VT-51) aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto (CVL-30), a light carrier that was deployed in the North Pacific, according to U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command.

Bush’s squadron was conducting a bombing mission when it encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire, according to records from the U.S. Navy.

I read that in Fly Boys. I think Bradley’s book, and Iris Chang’s book on The Rape of Nanking should be required reading in every high school.

It seems the youth of this country thinks Japan’s nature is what they see in Godzilla movies and anime. The stuff they did is simply blood curdling. They seem to have changed their ways (as has Germany) but they were a bad, bad group of people.

Whistleblowers have said the elder Bush had a penchant for little girls. Which explains as he got closer to death, he couldn’t keep his hands off them.

CIA, involved in the assassination of JFK, undermined Reagan anytime he got the chance. New England liberal. He might’ve been slightly better than Clinton, mostly in the cultural cues. But not in anything meaningful

Reagan put Bush I in charge of national security so Reagan could concentrate on economic, financial, foreign and social policy. It was an effective division of labor given their respective talents.

The military brass were very aware when they talked to Bush I that he spoke with Presidential authority.

Hey, now: This is a bushie cheerleader thread. /s

Then again - ahem - I’m left wondering how much better off we’d have been without BOTH of them had the Japanese been better at gunnery...

HW Bush, LBJ, JFK, Gerald Ford, perhaps the conspiracy is that the Japs let them all live for a purpose.

In retrospect, it was a huge mistake to save him.

I watched it recently myself. I always thought this movie was more like a drama than a war movie.

No, the democrats suckered him to break his no new taxes vow by claiming to need to balance the budget. He fell for it and they reneged on the cuts to the budget and used his breaking of his vow against him.

Ross Perot was a convenient way to make a protest vote against him.

Iris Chang commited suicide after writing it. The horrors she uncovered haunted her.

Sometimes you get suckered. At least, we admit it. Democrats keep making excuses and telling lies.

41 would be a Democrat if he ran for office today. He was born in Massachusetts. He's a patrician so he will be on the blue team.

During his time, there were a lot of "Country Club Republicans" around. I don't think there's any left.

Not to defend all his faults, but HW Bush was the pro abortion candidate when running against Reagan. After he became Reagan’s running mate, he switched, including when he became President.

He stayed Anti Abortion after he became President and when running for a second term.

Timeline. The Phillipine invasion, Leyte, would not occur until October 1944.

Anyone who flew planes into battle in that war gets my respect. Flying off a ship? That’s just crazy ballsy.

Yeah, especially torpedo bombers - that was horrifically dangerous duty. Bush 41 was fortunate that he was in combat later in the war, after the Japanese navy had been substantially reduced. Never quite understood how the "wimp" epithet got attached to him; must've been the nasal speaking voice, and probably the contrast to Reagan.
