Stop & Shop will stop selling cigarettes and vapes this week as part of its dramatic commitment to 'community wellness'.
The American retailer will remove tobacco products from all 360 of its stores across the northeast from August 31.
The decision has been embraced by the American Cancer Society and health organizations.
The announcement follows the lead of CVS, Target and Walmart.
'From our team of registered dietitians that serve our customers at no cost to our trained and trusted pharmacy associates, Stop & Shop aims to support the health and well-being of the neighborhoods we serve — and this exit from tobacco is one more way we’re accomplishing that goal,' Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a statement.
Stop & Shop is yet to reveal whether the products were still being sold in high volume.
Last month, the retailer announced it was closing 32 'underperforming' stores across five states; Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
While the number of smokers has gradually decreased globally over the last 25 years, there are still 1.6million in America.
Many have previously slammed retailers for pulling away from the products and have criticized local politicians for encouraging diminished sales while nurturing a budding marijuana industry.

I don’t smoke very much at all. People who are addicted to drugs will get them anyway. Those stores should offer ways and services to get people off of all addictive drugs.
All they are doing now is virtue signaling. If they were serious, they would stop selling alcohol, sugary drinks, and high fat foods.
Meanwhile, legal and illegal marijuana, ethanol, fentanyl, sales are booming. At least the younger people who cause car wrecks and who OD on opiates will have less lung cancer, and vascular diseases when they get older. Big Whoopee.
Started coughing. And coughing - I couldn’t stop coughing.
“Am I going to quit smoking, or am I going to quit breathing (much sooner than planned)?” I asked myself.
I’m still here, so you know the answer.
Tossed ALL the butts.
Went through six months or so of horrible nicotine withdrawal. Awful.
But I’m VERY glad I quit. I will never touch nicotine, again.

Private company can stop selling tobacco if they wish.
Hard fact, if a retail establishment doesn’t sell cigarettes then smokers are not likely to stop there because they’re going to have to stop somewhere else for cigarettes too.
I think dirty is too thick to realize that giving the government power to prohibit something you don’t like will eventually empower the government to take away something you like or even need. I will bet that dirty likes his gasoline vehicle but all that CO2 is now supposedly a health concern.
What is your counter argument dirty?
I see that if you don’t like something that has nothing to do with you or that you are totally fine with empowering government to force behavior on other people. You are a buffet totalitarian that is fine with stomping on people you don’t agree with or dislike. The second that you stomped on I will bet that you squeal like a pig.
No big deal to hit two or three stores where I live.
No fags at Target? And I thought Walmart still sold them in some stores.
I believe Skittles are banned in California. Supposedly contain titanium.
And, will the weed shops stop selling weed?
Isn’t any/all smoking bad, lefties?
Don’t worry, big government is working on telling you what you may eat.
Who can afford cigarettes in this economy?
Graph the increase in obesity in America against the decrease in cigarette smoking. There is a health cost to discouraging smoking. Whether to causes more health problems than it prevents certainly needs more study. My guess is that it is a wash. But there's no reliable data out there on that.
That makes for stronger bones. Better than calcium!
Mainly poor folks, from what I've seen.
All of our Walmarts still carry them.
You don’t need cigarettes if you have purple drank. At least that’s what the others say at the trailer park.
It is the end of the day and you have to get something on the way home as well as some cigarettes and you are tire and just want to get home, are you going to shop one store or two? The usual answer will be one store.
Jen Smith from UK must be some kind of nutty relative to Little Jackie “Alfalfa” Smith the Trump Hater. Walmarts haven’t quit selling smokes. I can’t say about Target. I don’t go in their because I’m straight and my mother and father were married.
