After years of encouraging shoppers to scan their own groceries, some supermarkets are checking out a move back to traditional tills.
Asda said it would put more staff on checkouts, while Morrisons admitted it might have "gone too far" with self-scan. Northern upmarket chain Booths has got rid of them altogether.
The dreaded "unexpected item in the bagging area" announcement is among a list of customer complaints about self-service tills.
But some shoppers told the BBC they're happy to skip the queues and the chit chat if it speeds up their shop.
The debate over staffed versus unstaffed tills has continued to rumble on as the number of self-scan tills has increased over the past 20 years to some 80,000 in the UK.

Whenever I bother going I see confused seniors who require assistance with them. It defeats the whole object if staff have to stay on hand to intervene.
Every time I swipe Nyquil someone has to come by and check ID. If it’s self-service I should be able to check my own ID.
people cheat and steal..and here in NJ where plastic bags are illegal and restaurants and stores are fined for offering plastic straws with their drinks or are putting your items in a disposable plastic bag and a deli, 7-11, etc. are also fined if they use these bags...
people are now hiding items in reusable plastic bags and at self-scanners, it’s very easy to steal.l Some costco stores had to remove self scanning or they have an employee at each self-scanner which is counter productive on their part as they can have these people at the cash registers or as they say today, check out counters.
The need for human labor steadily decreases across our society. This won’t end well.

I would use self checkout, but they won’t let me scan in my sixer of Bartles & James
If I have to self checkout, I expect a discount. I did all the work.
Yes and I’ve had to call over staff before when using them.,
The staff patrol/march around the self-service
area which is now 100% in the one near me (the two or three traditional checkouts are unmanned).
I dont understand why they bother it’s not really saving on labor and customers prefer the traditional checkouts
Whatever happened to the idea that you’d just walk out of the store without going through checkout, and it would automatically scan a chip or something?
It isn’t my job to handle the cash register scanning, nor to bag my groceries and put them in the cart.
I dont know lol
Amazon was doing this but I dont think it caught on?
Yeah but that’s the 60th bottle of Nyquil you’ve bought this month.
It’s a good point
That’s just to protect you from purchasing something you shouldn’t.
The teasing. It burns.
Robo checkers are coming.
I’m back to waiting 15-20 minutes in the checkout at Walmart. I’d been avoiding Walmart lately because of that.
I go out of my way to use self-checkout. But I don’t steal.
It’s peak black-fatigue.
The big problem with that, I suppose, is that you wouldn’t be able tell the shoplifters from the honest customers. And it is the shoplifters that are causing self-checkout to fail.
