The 1950s was a decade known for bold, brutalist architecture and some of the flashiest cars in history. With a booming post-war economy, people were eager to fill their new homes with shiny new possessions.

Automakers competed fiercely to create the most glamorous and eye-catching cars possible. While some cars from this era were stunningly beautiful, others were simply considered hideous.

I hate it when a YouTube vid is the source. I don’t want to sit and do that, I’m a pretty fast reader and besides don’t they contribute money to the left. Why make them richer?

A costomized version of the Nash Healey owned by Ted Williams. The whereabouts of this car is unknown. Somre speculate his family still has the car, parked in a garage in his old estate in Ocala, FL. There's also rumors been secretly locked up in a storage area in the basement of Trop Field in St. Pete

but I owned a Vega
My dad made the mistake of buying a Vega. It ran OK initially, until it hit 25k. Then the engine started burning oil thanks to the rings wearing the hell out of the cylinder walls and once it overheated the only thing the engine was good for was as a boat anchor >:(. We would've considered swapping out a Buick V-6 or small block Chevy but the body had serious rust issues as well. I had a 1968 Charger at the time. Even though it used twice as much gas it was actually cheaper to drive, that's how unreliable that sh*tbox Vega turned out to be.

I thought he was nuts. Now I find myself saying the same thing he did. Has to do with age, apparently.

Drove mine thru an unexpected snow storm from
Roswell to Albuquerque. No top, no doors. Hit the
bug out pack for the heavy coat and gloves. Had to
hang my head out past the windshield frame at times
to see ahead. The heater on high directed to the
floor kept my feet from freezing solid.
Bought it new in ‘79. Still have it 45 years later.
It’s been the most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Wish I had mine! Loved it. I had the very durable inline 6. I got a small leak in the head gasket that blew hot combustion gases onto a vacuum line. The gases got sucked into the engine upsetting the fuel air mix. It ran richer. A vicious cycle started until the combustion chambers got,fouled and I lost serious power. Had to finally pull the head and clean out all the carbon. That was an expensive repair. I was young and ignored the symptoms of rough running and power loss way too long.

I don’t think it has to do with age. If you look at cars from the 30’s and 40’s, they all look very similar to me. Not aerodynamic at all, like a block with a motor, but I’m still in love with them too. Today, they all have that aerodynamic wedge shape for handling and gas mileage, which I think makes them look similar.

There were some notable exceptions. I would love to have an Alburn Boat Tail Speedster. Guaranteed to go 120 miles an hour back in 1936.
