Costco shoppers haven't been shy about expressing their anger over the warehouse's new membership card policy. The new rule, which was implemented in some stores in January and is now rolling out nationwide, calls for mandatory membership card scans to enter the store.
As frustrating as the new policy has been for some shoppers, it turns out that Costco workers hate the mandatory card scanning, too. Or at least, they hate they way it's making some shoppers behave.
A Costco worker recently vented on Reddit about the membership card-scanning policy. They also offered disturbing details on the "abuse and mistreatment" workers have faced from irate customers who now have to scan their cards.
According to the Redditor, some employees tasked with scanning cards have been "reduced to tears" due to shoppers' abusive behavior.
"A bunch of you are mad. Now, imagine being the low level employee at the door that is instructed to enforce those policies. Imagine the abuse that YOU, the public, has subjected them to. Calling them slurs. Getting in their faces. Swearing at them. Threatening them. Assaulting them. Spitting on them. Complaining to them," they wrote online.

It is asinine for anyone to get upset over this. You buy a membership and then get nasty when you are asked to verify it?
More importantly, what kind of management does nothing when their employees are abused? The management should be called over and immediately tell the customer to leave. AND the customer should be notified that a repeat of such behavior and they would be banned forever from ALL Costcos forever. This crap would stop.
When my wife was the accounting manager for a lumber company a contractor who lied about his credit references got abusive with her when she rejected him for a credit account. She immediately picked up the phone dialed 9-1 and held her finger over the 1, looked at him and said get out now! He did.
Not a good idea to hire democrat bimbos for jobs where their feelings might get hurt.
My COSTCO always asked to see the card before you were admitted too.
I don’t remember one person getting angry.
I’m guessing the COSTCO’s with ‘angry customers’ and crying employess are in blue city hellholes where democrats taught them the rules don’t apply to them.
We just got back from Costco. No one requested to scan our card. We live in a nice safe Red area.
A website on the internet where everything is made up and the points don't matter.
I’ll occasionally visit Costco on a Sunday afternoon.
I’ve never seen so many foreigners in my life. They must be coming from all over the planet.
I am guessing Costco wants its share of the dollars going to the foreigners. Are they all here legally? I am not so sure of that.
I was just there last week.
No “signs.”
;-)
I have no idea what this is all about, but perhaps it will be the case next time I have to stock up.
What angers ME about Costco is that all of their major appliances moved to Costco online.
Read the reviews sometime. I ended up buying my new washer/dryer set elsewhere.
I’ll never buy a major appliance from Costco again ever again (and Costco employees privately acknowledge that the new appliance policy is BS).
NO SOUP FOR THEM!!
Liberal or conservative, NO ONE as an employee doing their job should be subjected to abuse by a “customer”. It’s OK for a liberal employee to be spit on or verbally (or physically) assaulted? That’s hogwash. Management should revoke the memberships of abusive customers and ban them from the store.
Our society has gotten so coarse over the decades because people and institutions put up with it. And it is not just “those people” doing it, although they are the worst and largest offenders because they have been encouraged to be this way.
check-out employees could really gum up the works by checking every item in my cart against my receipt...
the the lines backed up would be hellish.
Do you live in Cary, NC?
So many there it is now nicknamed Curry, NC.
I’m not defending abusive customers.
That said, in all the years I’ve shopped at COSTCO I’ve never seen a customer get angry for having to show their card when they entered the store. My local COSTCO has required card ID to enter for at least 25 years.
I’m guessing the two groups of ‘customers’ who want to get in without being members are one, people looking to see if it’s worth the money to join AND two, people who want to steal from the store. The first group can probably get a one day pass and the second group needs to understand they’re not welcome.
You don’t show it, you use it.
That’s my thought as well, yep.
I agree with you. We always had to show our membership cards anyway.
If you refuse to do that, then suck it up and stand in line courteously.
Even where the cards are scanned, if someone doesn’t have their card out, everyone just walks around them, scans and moves on.
I guess no more free international sample date nights.
I live in SC
They have been checking our cards here for years, since they got here and with sample days the whole time.
