Costco shoppers haven't been shy about expressing their anger over the warehouse's new membership card policy. The new rule, which was implemented in some stores in January and is now rolling out nationwide, calls for mandatory membership card scans to enter the store.
As frustrating as the new policy has been for some shoppers, it turns out that Costco workers hate the mandatory card scanning, too. Or at least, they hate they way it's making some shoppers behave.
A Costco worker recently vented on Reddit about the membership card-scanning policy. They also offered disturbing details on the "abuse and mistreatment" workers have faced from irate customers who now have to scan their cards.
According to the Redditor, some employees tasked with scanning cards have been "reduced to tears" due to shoppers' abusive behavior.
"A bunch of you are mad. Now, imagine being the low level employee at the door that is instructed to enforce those policies. Imagine the abuse that YOU, the public, has subjected them to. Calling them slurs. Getting in their faces. Swearing at them. Threatening them. Assaulting them. Spitting on them. Complaining to them," they wrote online.

This will probably fade away in due time. Just like when they adopted self-check out. At the store I frequent, they cut the number of self-check out station in half because they were a big bottle-neck and slowed down the check out process.

I’m sure
Costco is probably losing a lot from theft
Retail theft is very high
A lot of people think that they have a “right” to steal
What state are you in? My Sams used to do that but was overturned by the State law. They had a pharmacy in the store and as such cannot require a membership for a pharmacy, hence everyone can come in.
Costco is a business, not a daycare.
Well, you’ve always had to scan to check out. I suppose that a non-member previously could get in to look around with an expired card, but so what?
I certainly don’t excuse or condone any customer getting angry with staff over the new entry policy, BUT I have noticed that is has slowed down entry a bit. The Costcos that i got to have had 2 membership card scanners at the door, but if 4 or 5 people are entering at the same time, you may be slowed down by 30 or 40 seconds if the other customers don’t have their cards ready to scan. I think maybe 4 membership card scanners at the door would reduce the possibility of a bottleneck.
Or how about RFID/NFC membership cards or phone apps (like keyless entry on cars) that simply relay your membership status wirelessly without you having to scan anything? The person at the door could stop people who don’t clear wirelessly.
Question: can family members enter with the one card? If not, I can see a problem.
(One talkative checkout clerk told me that shop lifting was epidemic
THIS is absolutely true and correct - lots of thieves in America these days - probably all over the world 🌏🌍
They can quit and customers don’t need to go to Costco.
It’s a membership store.
The degradation of society has made them need to enforce the membership — which we pay for — aspect.
Freeloaders want to freeload.
Keep them out.
(It makes you wonder why the heck are people so upset about it?)
Because a good percentage of the public are spoiled brats, crybaby children who can’t spare 7 seconds
Cops at the entrance?
They should also implement 2 adults only per card policy. That would stop all the hispanics from bringing in their entire families plugging up the aisles.
It does not we all show our card, get right in, no slow down whatsoever and it’s always busy.
“ They scan your card when you pay and the visually look at it when you enter. ”
That doesn’t stop shoplifters who went in or non-members otherwise scamming.
It’s Brandon’s America that caused the need for this enforcement.
“Don’t like it? Quit.”
Exactly. The average boss isn’t any smarter than you and many are dumber. Try working for yourself, you’ll learn a lot.
You can never be paid fully for what you produce when working for someone else because they have to make a profit off you to stay in business (certain higher positions are exceptions, but not many). I figured this out by age 26 and worked for myself from then on, retiring at 60. Now the assets work and I supervise them.
I don’t have a Costco card but my daughter does. Her card is always scanned at the entrance and she just says, “she’s with me”. No problem
The problem is that Costco is often out of the things we shop for. She has four dogs and her favorite dogfood is no longer there. Anyone seen Alaskan Salmon Burgers lately?
BS post!
“ It will slow down entry for everyone.”
I went there yesterday. First time I saw this set up.
It really didn’t slow anything down. Just walk by and beep it rather than show it.
At my Costco it’s like half of Calcutta is there.
🔝🔝
But you do have to show a membership card at the checkout register and/or at the door to get any product OUT the store (which is the essence of the business).
