If you have iron deficiency symptoms, get them tested and make sure you have them treated with timely follow up tests.

I have iron tablets but I rarely take them - guess I’ll take one or two now!

Eat spinach.

A few days ago I had a physical and my doctor called and said my iron was too high.

Well for the past 3 months I’ve been eating alot of spinach dip.

Yummy on steroids!

There are a few conditions like my cold agglutinin disease where a person can be anemic and it is not an iron deficiency. ALWAYS have your iron levels checked before beginning iron supplements.

“Eat red meat.”
—————————

Getting the RDA is hard for women even before factoring in heavy menses. And it seems like the non-doctors providing medical care to us are poorly trained regarding iron.

Women - get your ferritin checked, do your stupid three month trial of iron pills to appease the insurance company, and then tell your doctor the iron pills cause problems (upset stomach, constipation) and you would like an iron infusion. Do not be satisfied until your ferritin is over 50!

Brain fog and fatigue from low ferritin is real - you don’t have to live that way!

When young my gynecologist often found I had anemia and low iron. I would take iron tablets sometimes with improvement, but forget and slip back down. Then I read Adelle Davis’s book Let’s Eat Right to Keep FIt and Let’s Get Well. ONe of those books gave me the information to take vitamins C and E for my developing varicose veins. Within a month my veins were healing/disappearing, then I saw my doctor again and my anemia was gone. I subsequently read that red blood cells when one is anemic may only live 85 days, but when taking adequate Vitamin E may live 115 days. So apparently the E fixed my RBC’s life span by increasing it 30 days.

from link:

cooking in a cast iron skillet can add significant amounts of iron to your food and into your body. In addition to eating more iron-rich foods like meats, beans, and spinach, cooking in a cast iron pot is an easy way to boost your iron intake.

Thalassemia major and minor. Doctors are always telling me to take iron and then I have to remind them I have a genetic disorder.

Btw if you have Mediterranean, middle eastern, or Asian background you need to be especially aware of thalassemia and whether or not you and the other parent are carriers

Have a dear friend (ex girlfriend) just getting past chemo. She was a vegetarian. Docs told her to eat red meat for the iron content. She complied - and discovered she actually likes beef. Sometimes the world is weird.

Spinach and eggs every day and steak twice a week. Hamburgers here and there. Seem to do okay in the gym with those in the diet.

Spinach is good! Esp if sautéed in olive oil with a little garlic. Raw spinach is also good. Wash it first though.
