News Analysis: Trump seeks to reclaim spotlight with old playbook of lying, talking smack to media

Standing next to a spread of coffee, cereal and breakfast meats at his New Jersey golf club on Thursday, former President Trump started what he billed as his second news conference in as many weeks by highlighting increased costs of everyday foodstuffs due to inflation — a major issue for voters in November.

Then, he veered off into a rambling 40-minute speech — uninterrupted by media questions — in which he aired old political grievances and debunked conspiracy theories, and lied, repeatedly, about the state of the economy, the safety of the nation and the policies of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running against him in the presidential race.

Among other things, Trump made the false claim — easily debunked — that Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, made it legal for thieves in California to “rob a store” if what they take is worth less than $950.

Thieves are “going into stores with calculators, calculating how much it is, because if it’s less than $950, they can rob it and not get charged,” Trump said. “That was her that did that.”

Trump’s event was part of a new campaign strategy to draw a contrast with Harris, whom the Trump campaign has been hammering for not taking media questions as she rides a wave of Democratic enthusiasm. But it and other recent events have had the additional effect of reviving a much older Trump strategy for drumming up attention — which is essentially for him to stand in front of reporters and talk smack.

LA times proving once again that they are nothing but feckless democrat lapdogs

I would have said "feckless democrat handbags," but I guess a handbag can't be feckless.

Possibly but the vast vast majority of them are people that go through relating to the world superficially and by emotion.

It’s a lesson nobody wants to acknowledge of what the end result is in democracy otherwise known as mobocracy. You reach a point where everything is decided this way. Whip up emotionally with PR a bunch of people up over a subject get them to vote the way you want on that subject. Then feed them pittances of their own money (taxes) back to them. They’ll even vote their own demise if you package it right. The Founding Fathers knew this that’s why they designed a republic with democratic elements. We started forgetting that lesson almost from the beginning. The tipping point was the 16th & 17th Amendments, Wilson & FDR administrations

Perhaps they are saying is that ‘technically’ it was not the camel that initiated those policies. Just her friends and associates.

Oh, and the thieves don’t actually bring calculators. They just rush in, smash and grab.

Wow, if LAT knows all the answers to these things, maybe they should run for POTUS.

The article said “easily debunked”, but this the worst so-called debunking ever.

Not to mention Trump stole Kamala’s idea of doing away with taxes on tips! I ask you, is there no low this orange man won’t stoop to?

Oh, and the thieves don’t actually bring calculators. They just rush in, smash and grab.

And the Kingdom of Heaven is not actually a mustard seed. But, boy, did Trump bring out the consequences to Cal Prop 47 making under $950 a misdemeanor.

And when researching which prop it was, the "fact-checkers" sure jumped out saying Prop 47 did not take the consequences away for under $950 theft. It just turned it from a felony to a misdemeanor.

You know...just effectively taking the consequences away.

...if it’s less than $950, they can rob it and not get charged,” Trump said. “That was her that did that.”

Facts are facts. Did she do that, or did she not? Or was it the CA legislature that OKd the policy, with her approval? Or an executive order by the governor?

Just the facts, please.

...Cal Prop 47 making under $950 a misdemeanor.

A misdemeanor is still a crime. We've been led to believe that no criminal charges would be filed if under $950. Just the facts, please.

So he was lying?

“Prop 47 has achieved that goal while not causing crime rates to go up.” You mean if you make something not a crime, it does not count as a crime. Genius. So to reduce the murder rate, make murder not a crime. Problem solved.
