Peter Marshall, the actor and singer turned game show host who played straight man to the stars for 16 years on “The Hollywood Squares,” has died. He was 98.
He died Thursday of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said.
Marshall helped define the form of the smooth, professional, but never-too-serious modern game show host on more than 5,000 episodes of the series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1981.

Grocho Marx hosted a game show too
I stood directly behind George in the hotdog line at Dodger Stadium at game 4 of the 1977 World Series against the Yankees.
I was a kid. Hollywood Squares was some funny shit! RIP Peter Marshall.

The Double Entendres were amazing!
Who are the four on the Mt. Rushmore of game show hosts?
Peter Marshall, Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Pat Sajak, Monty Hall, Dick Clark, Bill Cullen, Chuck Woolery, Gene Rayburn, Alan Ludden, Richard Dawson, Regis Philbin,
I recall him from “Treasure Hunt”.
I would start out with Bob Barker and Alex Trebek as first ballot.
Pat Sajak is only known for one show.
Monty Hall is too, but I can see no one else doing “Let’s Make A Deal” (reboots failed big)
Bill Cullen, Art James and Tom Kennedy have numerous hit shows.
I would give it to Barker, Trebek, Jack Barry (21, Joker’s Wild) and Bill Cullen. (And that is despite the fact that Art Fleming was better than Trebek in Jeopardy!)
My personal favorite is Art James.
I wouldn’t argue with anyone pushing for Monty Hall or Pat Sajak.
LOL!!! SO TRUE!!
I missed Art James completely. There are a lot to choose from.

We’re gonna need a bigger mountain.😆
We need a snarky retort from Paul Lynde...
I remember one Hollywood Squares question was so funny, Marshall couldn’t stop laughing and he couldn’t ask the question. Everyone was puzzled and the show had to go to a commercial break. When the show came back on the air he was in a bit better control and apologized.
The question: True or False... The world’s largest tuna fishing fleet operates out of Casper, Wyoming.
HE & NICK CLOONEY hosted OLDER music programs on PBS.

YEARS AGO-—I was a cashier at a grocery store at Hollywood & Vine.
I waited on Betty & her mother many times. Both were stunningly beautiful & very nice.
