Peter Marshall, the actor and singer turned game show host who played straight man to the stars for 16 years on “The Hollywood Squares,” has died. He was 98.

He died Thursday of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said.

Marshall helped define the form of the smooth, professional, but never-too-serious modern game show host on more than 5,000 episodes of the series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1981.

I stood directly behind George in the hotdog line at Dodger Stadium at game 4 of the 1977 World Series against the Yankees.

When I think of the Hollywood Squares, I think of this infamous flaming Center Square.

Paul Lynde's mad, sad, totally fab life

Who are the four on the Mt. Rushmore of game show hosts?

Peter Marshall, Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Pat Sajak, Monty Hall, Dick Clark, Bill Cullen, Chuck Woolery, Gene Rayburn, Alan Ludden, Richard Dawson, Regis Philbin,

I would start out with Bob Barker and Alex Trebek as first ballot.

Pat Sajak is only known for one show.

Monty Hall is too, but I can see no one else doing “Let’s Make A Deal” (reboots failed big)

Bill Cullen, Art James and Tom Kennedy have numerous hit shows.

I would give it to Barker, Trebek, Jack Barry (21, Joker’s Wild) and Bill Cullen. (And that is despite the fact that Art Fleming was better than Trebek in Jeopardy!)

My personal favorite is Art James.

I wouldn’t argue with anyone pushing for Monty Hall or Pat Sajak.

I’ve been watching YouTube videos of the Gong Show.

He wasn't even supposed to host the Gong Show. John Barbour was pictured as the host in TV Guide, with Gary Owens doing the weekly nighttime version.

Chuck (if I recall) thought that Barbour just didn't get what the show was about . . . silly, but sometimes pretending to take itself seriously. Gary Owens was closer, but Chuck replaced him, too. Chuck was right.

I remember one Hollywood Squares question was so funny, Marshall couldn’t stop laughing and he couldn’t ask the question. Everyone was puzzled and the show had to go to a commercial break. When the show came back on the air he was in a bit better control and apologized.
The question: True or False... The world’s largest tuna fishing fleet operates out of Casper, Wyoming.

Married to BETTY WHITE

YEARS AGO-—I was a cashier at a grocery store at Hollywood & Vine.

I waited on Betty & her mother many times. Both were stunningly beautiful & very nice.
