Southern California skydiver killed in weather-related mishap

Devrey LaRiccia Chase, 28, and her student were descending toward the ground during a routine jump in Perris last Tuesday when they ran into a pair of “dust devils,” Devrey’s husband, Freddy Chase, told KTLA 5 News.... At that point, she was about 25 to 30 feet in the air… It sent her canopy in a downward spiral.”

With no time to react, Devrey and her student slammed into the ground. Both were rushed to a local hospital, where Devrey succumbed to her injuries.

“She was beautiful in the sport and in her passion for skydiving,” Freddy recalled. “It was what she talked about every day. She loved doing what she did.”

Back in the 70’s there was a center in Xenia Ohio that had a number of “accidents” caused by a group called “The Herd” trying to outdo each other doing stupid stuff.

Well that sure wasn't me, I always enjoyed a long scenery filled parachute glide. Which helped once when my chute failed to open and I had to use my reserve.

As a novice, they always had me open high, like 2,000 feet, so I’d have plenty of time if anything went wrong. Never had to use my reserve, fortunately. I liked a nice long descent under a good canopy, too.

My girlfriends sister was hot back in the day. The tandem thing came up a time or two but . . . it never happened. She wasn’t into skydiving.

We used to joke that the F- rating of a dust devil was determined by how many Walmart bags were swirling around in it.

I guess it caught on, because at one point radio host Jim Villanucci repeated the joke on-air.

Sometimes, I’m in the mood for a little danger.

Skydiving is one of the best ways to safely get a memorable shot of adrenaline when done correctly (memorable as in "lifetime").

I would urge you to find a jump school that will train you the "old-fashioned" way: a few hours of ground school and after 3-5 static line jumps you would be qualified to do a "clear and pull" jump. Static line jumps are very mechanical, there is little the Jumper can do to screw it up.

I would "urge" you because there will come a time when you wish you had jumped, and it will not be practical.

(I had a 30' "round" reserve because I was a fit 220+ lbs.)

I really liked Villanucci, although the current crop of 770 hosts is pretty good, except TJ Trout who is a bit too lefty.

He used to have this one guy call in who was a lefty lunatic - “Chris from Abiquiu” or something like that. He had a disordered mind. I couldn’t listen to him ramble on or I would lose IQ points.

You could also do an Accelerated Free Fall Training. 2 day ground school. First jump solo at. 12,500’. You exit plane behind a jump master. Another one follows you. They both stay close til you open your shoot. They are supposed to help if problem occurs. You will have reserve set to deploy at 2500’ if things don’t go well.
I jumped a few years. It is pretty fun.
If you want a rush, strap yourself to a bull.

Yeah, sure. I know how this works. I’ve seen it countless times on tv.

They declare her legally dead, whisk her away to a top secret laboratory where they implant bionic parts into her body and give her a new identity and job as a top secret agent.

Don’t jump out of airplanes.

Stupid risk. We're civilians. No reason to jump out of airplanes.
