A disturbance in the Atlantic continues to be watched for possible formation into a tropical storm, but there are multiple scenarios in play when it comes to the track of this system as it nears the Bahamas and the southeastern United States by this weekend.

Where is the disturbance now? The tropical wave that might eventually grow into a tropical depression or storm is located near the Leeward Islands, or near the "X" in the graphic below, according to the National Hurricane Center.

It's been battling an abundance of dry air for days but is now showing some signs of increased shower and thunderstorm development. That could be a sign the system is in the beginning stages of some slow organization.

When and where could it develop? The National Hurricane Center says development, if it occurs, won't happen until sometime by this weekend, generally in the shaded area on the map below. Most computer models suggest that development could occur by Friday or this weekend.

Family used to know the legendary forecaster from the Miami NHC— who moved up to near Canaveral and built a truly hurricane proof home- prestressed concrete anti-wind design, the works. Can’t recall his name. He was always on national, think it was ABC— and always accurate. Will have to rack memory from the days before the internet.

I no doubt saw your friend on TV talking hurricanes. There are broadly speaking two approaches to weather forecasting. The modern approach relies on masses of data and sophisticated computer models. Until recently, the traditional approach, which uses maps, history, and weather cycles, often did better.

On our way to NY we travel through VT and the area that got flooded out a couple years ago, Okemo.

It was pretty impressive what damage water can do.

And it wasn’t water damage as much as washed out roads and boulders moved and stuff. Water is far more powerful than most people realize.

IMO, the warnings can be helpful but anyone who lives in FL and is not prepped well before hurricane season is foolish.

Waiting until the last minute to decide to prep is doubly so.

Where are we in the alphabet now? Have they gotten to Tropical Possibility Yolanda yet?

Fortunately, Florida as a whole is now better prepared than ever before. Utility lines are hardened and repair crews ready for action as a matter of routine. Many grocery stores and select gas stations also have backup power generators.

I just looked at the 7 day Atlantic storm forecast. It appears a “disturbance” could hit anywhere from Tierra del Fuego to Nova Scotia. /s

They might as well have shaded the entire globe orange.
