The questions behind the Ozempic baby boom
Financial Times ^ | 7/16/2024 | Anjana Ahuja

Women taking the anti-diabetes medication Ozempic might have an extra reason to pat their tummies. Not only does the injectable drug lead to weight loss, a finding that has sparked frenzied off-label demand worldwide, but in recent months it has also been linked to a surprise baby boom.

Now scientists are trying to unpick the mechanism behind the “Ozempic babies” phenomenon, which has been reported by users of similar medications, too. This matters: the drugs were never tested for use by women who were pregnant or trying to conceive, and animal studies on Ozempic’s key ingredient, semaglutide, suggest an association with birth defects.

Let me guess. Lose a ton of weight, and there's something nice underneath?

The drug works by paralyzing the stomach. No thanks.

Way too many gut issues to keep taking it. The weight falls right off then it feels like Mike Tyson giving you body blows. Then there is the pharmaceutical grade vomiting. Mrs. Delta 21 was on it as well and we werent swinging from the chandeliers any more than usual.

Obesity suppresses ovulation, probably because of the effects of high blood sugar.

Also women with PCOS tend to be overweight and have more trouble conceiving and carrying a child.

The diabetes medication metformin has long been used to treat PCOS.

Exactly. Not a mystery. People get hotter. Feel better about themselves. Look good. And have sex.

Shocking mystery.

“Ozempic babies”

Yeah...I'm old enough to remember "Thalidomide babies" so pardon my cynicism regarding whatever positives this article is trying to make of this.

My wife has lost a lot of weight on this, she’s ten years younger but now looks 15 years younger, and she’s suddenly very, very, very frisky! I’m scared! 😜😎

One would think getting pregnant while taking Ozempic might be complicated because that drug tends to cause several Tummy Troubles as side effects. Maybe the women stop taking it while carrying.

What??

Pharmaceutical grade barfing???

I told hubby that perhaps all of the gross, recent happenings on commercial airlines (barfing/pooping in aisles) might be due to too many Ozempic users?

What ever happened to lifestyle changes, over taking a d@m drug??

That crap is going to destroy millions of people’s lives. Very dangerous long term consequences. If you expressed the symptoms this drug causes without taking anything, doctors would be trying to find out what was wrong. This stuff basically works by destroying your digestive system so you don’t eat as much. Essentially, you are starving.

I got put on Rybelsus for my diabetes which has the same weight loss results as the ozempic. I only learned that after taking it for a month and not understanding why I was losing weight. Looked it up online and the connection clicked. I have NO side effects whatsoever.

Having no appetite is totally strange. There’s no nostalgia for food or thinking about the next meal. Can’t finish anything, but isn’t that what husbands are for? (Both dogs disagree, but they’ll have to fight husband for the leftovers.) You just need to push the protein for what you do eat.
