McDonald's reported a surprise fall in sales in the April to June quarter - as customers cut down on trips to the fast food giant.
Americans placed fewer orders than a year ago - meaning sales were down by nearly one per cent. Globally, sales fell by a similar amount.
McDonald's saw fewer customers, but it said those who came spent more because of price increases.
It was the first sales decline since 2020 when the pandemic shuttered stores and millions stayed home. Profits also slumped by 12 percent.
Big price rises - including fan favorites like a Big Mac meal hitting $17.59 - are blamed for customers staying away.
'The biggest hit for McDonald's is the low-income consumer has really cut back on visits and that is more than offsetting the typical trade down [the chain] normally sees in tougher economic times,' said Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough.
McDonald's results dovetail with comments last week from Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, who said sales were slow in restaurants - an indication of fewer people eating out.
McDonald's also reported lower store traffic in China, France and the Middle East, where people have been boycotting McDonald´s because of a perception that it supports Israel in the war in Gaza.

>> They use a fresh egg on their Egg McMuffin. <<
An egg which is absolutely uniformly bright, bright yellow.
No, you're thinking of the pasteurized egg used in the McGriddles. They fry fresh eggs for the McMuffin in metal rings on the grill.
I can do a hamburger cookout for 4 for $17.39.
.
Big Mac, Cheese burger, fries, Chicken Mcnuggets, drink. No GMO's, huge memu.

Can't wait for the McVodka Royale.
“McRib
I never understood the appeal.”
Americans love them some fast food. I never really understood the attraction.
The cheapest meals are those you make from scratch at home. A lesson understood by every generation before “fast food” became a thing.
You don’t go to a fast food outlet for fine food, you go for quick (fast) inexpensive meals, you are in effect buying time (it would take to make a meal at home). Fast food (never the most healthy) is no longer cheap nor fast.
Preparing a meal at home does not require the skills of a chef you only need to the ability to follow instructions (cook books, recipes).
Perhaps dinner with the family may return (growing up in the 1950s you would not even think of eating anywhere other then the dinning room table). Dinners were family time.
America lost something when we lost that.
“Are they using Worms again?”
Wasn’t that Tico Taco?
Not McDonald’s, but the other night we had some friends over and got fried chicken from a gas station (OK, they’re known for their fried chicken)
For five people, gas station fried chicken was over $50
They do that on the biscuit too now, 2A, and it is the b0mb. Better than the bagel, believe me.
I used to like just about everything from McDonalds, except for some of their ‘special’ beverages.
But in the last four years, the quality has gone down even faster than the prices have gone up.
A deadly combination to any food business.
Growing up we NEVER ate fast food, not even at the beach or amusement parks. Mom made sandwiches, salads and Koolade.
Looks that way. A one dollar purchase in 1964 would cost 9.84 today.
I remember buying 7 hamburgers for a dollar back then. But a 1964 quarter will still get you more than a gallon of gas.
Cool
We watch very few current TV shows or movies, but mostly old stuff - MeTV, GRIT, TCM, etc. One of our hobbies is to look up current inflated dollar values in old movies and shows.
You are correct, the mid-60s dollar was worth ten today. Mid 80s dollars about 3x. The year of my birth (1950), about 13.3x
Thanks for the head's up. I haven't had the urge to eat that slop in a couple of decades but that cements it.
But then, this picky eater has always been the "Have it Your Way" kind of guy. Double Cheese with mustard and pickle, is my way.
I’m a twentieth-century man but I don’t want, I don’t want to be here
I guess that’s why some people buy gold.
1950 price - 40.25
2024 price - 2490.00
