CHICO, Calif. — The Park Fire burning in Northern California near Chico has now become one of the largest wildfires in state history as flames continue to grow, causing additional evacuations to now spread across four counties and taking aim at a community that is still reeling from a deadly wildfire just six years ago.
But some good news emerged for firefighters with the weather forecast as the weekend began without the triple-digit heat and Fire Weather Warnings of the past few days.
CAL Fire now estimates the Park Fire has burned more than 350,000 acres as of midday Saturday, which ranks the fire as No. 7 on California’s list of most acreage burned by a fire. At least 134 homes and structures have been damaged or destroyed and another 4,200 are threatened, fire officials said. Over 50 community zones are now under evacuation warnings across 4 counties, spanning more than 4,400 people.
“Extreme fire behavior has occurred due to the slope and winds aligning, causing significant growth,” CAL Fire officials wrote in their Saturday morning update. “Damage inspection teams are working to identify structures that have been damaged or destroyed.”
So far, there are no reports of any deaths, but two people have been treated for minor injuries.
Vanessa Starling, who lives near the heavily damaged town of Cohasset, told FOX 2 Bay Area they could hear the sound as they evacuated their home.
“It was pretty crazy, there is one spot that had a little fire tornado going on. We could hear it, just this roaring sound, you can hear the fire roaring as we were leaving,” Starling said, worried about her family home. “We have property that’s been in our family since 1905.”
Late Friday night, the entire town of Paradise, California was placed under an evacuation...

Push the man in to the gully
In a burning car.
I live in Magalia, Ca. The firefighters have done an amazing job of diverting the fire away from our community as well as Paradise and Forest Ranch. The arsonist has been identified.
Ronnie Stout has two other felony convictions: He was convicted of child molestation in Butte County in 2001 and robbery with great bodily injury in Kern County in 2002. Stout was in prison for 19 years after the second conviction, records from Kern County show.
When officials arrested him this week, Stout was still on probation for a DUI, the district attorney’s office said. While officials said he has not yet been charged, they plan to book him on suspicion of intentional arson once they finish reviewing the evidence. He is now in the Butte County Jail, and the arraignment is set for Monday, according to the district attorney.

Lack of management. A fire can leave a lot of standing fuel. add to that what comes up thereafter as stimulated by the hormones fire leaves behind, and the second fire can be hotter than the first. Selecting the best ways to manage fuels depends upon local conditions, a thesis at odds to centralized command and control socialism.
They’ll give him a lifetime sentence of banning him from matches.
oh no - not Paradise again. they only have limited avenues of egress so hope they are paying attention.
He’ll do 6 months then released. It’s how the justice system they operates in California.
We had considered buying a house in Redding. But abandoned the idea after finding out it has one of the hottest climate in CA.
This arsonist was a child molester. These deviant child molesters are beyond rehabilitation and should be killed when convicted.
Did PG&E start this one, too?
