My Conversation with a Liberal Family Member

I spoke with my wife's aunt today who is visiting us in Texas from Washington State. For the record, she is a kind, understanding and great aunt to my family but when the topic flipped to the Biden resignation, a few things came out about the Left Wing mind.

The immediate things that were said were:

Trump cut taxes for the rich Citizens United case was the first time crony capitalism came into existence She wants Kamala because she really, really wants a female President. She likes Kamala OK, no qualms about her ability Trump had a sharp shooter to get sympathy (injure not kill) Canada has great healthcare Immigration isn't a big deal She thinks Adam Schiff should run for President, he's smart with good ideas and reaches across the aisle

I have liberal friends and relatives, all good people. Some are naive Bernie Bros. But most are old-school JFK Democrats. I will not discuss politics with them, period.

It would be like trying to convert a fanatic from one religion to another. Any conversion (religious or political) has to start from within. So…

Liberal friend: Trump would be bad for the country. He wants to start a war.
Me: I’m thinking of buying a Toyota Tacoma. What have you heard about them?

Yep. The 19th... It was inevitable, but even my (extremely bright and capable) sister commented 30 years ago that “Maybe it wasn’t a good idea. Women shouldn’t be involved in politics.”

My approach with liberal relatives is a bit different.

When they say the word “Trump” I ignore them and refuse to engage.

I will discuss other things that may drift into politics but I carefully plan my approach always avoiding anything that can ignite their Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I always use sources they can accept—like New York Slimes or Washington Compost or Atlantic as the basis for the discussion.

My tactic is to show hypocrisy and contradictions.

I can get away with it—because I am good at it.

As I have gotten older, I’ve realized I only have so much time left here under the sun. There are people I try to minimize any time I spend with regardless of their DNA. Your wife’s aunt would be one of those people.

I hope it opened your eyes to how severely cognitively impaired she is.

Not trying to be insulting. Just objectively look at how detached from reality her thinking is and see if you don’t agree. The things she believes simply do not hold any water.

My dear 93 year old mother told me she thought the Trump shooting was staged. I said “Oh my, you have been watching CNN again!” She has complained watching the news upsets her to which my brother and I told her, “Then stop watching the news...” I don’t think she will be voting this year.

About a year ago, I made a serious mistake. I was talking to an older relative of mine, a JFK Democrat. She’s a wonderful person, patriotic and hard-working.

We were talking about how all the mills and factories have left our region. I mentioned how Trump had a plan to bring the factories back. “Pity that didn’t happen,” I said.

To my surprise, my relative went completely berserk. “No, no no! Trump never had a good idea in his life!”

I immediately changed the subject to pierogis. My relative is all mixed up politically. But she does make great pierogis.
