Look up and celebrate both the wonders of the moon and humanity's achievements in space exploration.

When you look up this weekend you will see not only a striking full moon but also a piece of history.

In a rare celestial coincidence, July's full moon will share the spotlight with the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, providing a unique opportunity to reflect on humanity's achievements in space exploration and our enduring fascination with our closest neighbor.

The July full moon officially occurs on July 21 at 6:17 a.m. EDT (1017 GMT), but the moon will still appear full the night before and after the peak to the casual stargazer. This means it will still appear full during the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20.

In a rare celestial coincidence,

The article counts one day before and after the actual full moon day as close enough. So this "rare" occurance will happen about 10% of the years.

Awww...is that what the line in the Disney Pocahontas movie was saying? I could never understand it.

Is it “have you ever heard the wolf cry to the Fullbuck moon?” Nrver watched the movie, but that song was catchy

Perhaps make it through the Van Allen belts?

The Van Allen belts were created in 1973!

Van Allen recanted when they threatened to cut off his funding.

“Follow the science.”

Lol.

🥰

I love our deer guests!

We have a mom with twins this year. They are now at the bouncy bouncy boing boing stage.

Another doe looks like she’s due any minute. She’s sure been keeping the landscaping trimmed for me.

Those late arrivals always look super adorable in the fall when they get their winter coats. If it’s going to be a tough winter, they’ll end up looking like the snowsuit in A Christmas story.

I remember it clearly. Watched it on a B&W tv.

I remember it clearly as well. I was 16 at the time.

I watched the event on TV.

The next day I was playing golf with my grandmother—a sweet old lady who was former lady club champion. She never spoke to me (or anyone else as far as I knew ) about current events or anything that was not family related.

I was so excited.

I said “grandma—yesterday was the greatest day in the history of the human race. We landed on the moon.”

My grandma stopped me right there in the middle of the fairway. She gave me a very hard stare—something I had never seen from her before. She was angry—never seen that.

Then she said the magic words which shocked me at the time and did not sink in until decades later.

“We did not go to the moon. Never believe anything you see on TV.”

We never discussed that or any other current events again.

RIP Grandma—You nailed it.

Stanley Kubrick was in charge of filming the whole fake moon landing.

For added realism he insisted that the entire thing be filmed on the moon.

I look at it this way —

If the Moon landings turn out to be a mega hoax, that would be an even greater achievement in the world of ingenuity than what 6 actual missions could have ever accomplished.

Funny too, for the big announcement that Neil delivered to the entire planet:

That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Winning!

The world is on notice: do not mess with real ‘Mercans.

David McCullough in his book, The Great Bridge recalls an interview with an old woman on Long Island on the day of the Apollo 11 landing, asking her to compare it to the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. She said the Bridge was "bigger". It certainly was in terms of the impact on people living on Long Island, no longer cut off from the mainland. If they knew what was ahead, they might have changed their minds. (Of course the Pennsylvania Railroad would have finished construction of a railroad tunnel by 1910.)
