The US isn’t Russia’s enemy because we lack enemies we are enemies because our systems are diametrically opposed to one another, constitutional republic vs. totalitarian expansionist.
The US after the fall of the Soviet Union did engage the fledgling Russian Federation, through economic and humanitarian aid. For example 250 million was sent to Russia to feed poor Russians and the deputy Mayor of St. Petersburg was put in charge. He siphoned off 95 percent of that aid and enriched himself. His name was Vladimir Putin.
Well really the whole Russian authoritarianism goes back to Rurik when he was invited in specifically to force all the tribes/cities to play nice
