Tourist’s Insulting Act on Florence Statue Sparks Outcry
Greek Reporter ^ | July 19, 2024 | Nick Kampouris

A tourist in Florence, Italy has sparked outrage and criticism recently after she was filmed simulating an insulting sexual act with a Roman statue.

The statue was that of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and excess, the equivalent to the Greek god Dionysus.

This incident, totally insulting to the Italians and to everyone who admires the Roman world, took place near the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge of the beautiful Italian metropolis.

Florence statue incident condemned as insulting act of tourist Images of the woman who allegedly committed the insulting act on the statue in Florence have been circulating on social media for days.

The identity as well as the nationality of the individual remain unknown. However, speculation on social media has gone wild. The woman can clearly be seen climbing on the 16th-century statue of sculptor Giambologna. The statue is a bronze replica of an older, Roman statue. The woman was seen mimicking rude and insulting intimate behavior and acts, probably in the belief that these would spark humor.

Grecian Delight supports Greece However, residents of Florence and people from all over Italy and beyond began expressing their utter disgust at the insulting act. This incident has been seen by many as extremely rude and disrespectful to the culture and heritage of a proud nation like Italy.

“This is the result of years of attempts at turning Florence into Disneyland,” one local commented on Facebook, showing the level of annoyance that locals feel because of the disrespectful behavior of certain tourists. Another social media user stated “My goodness, the level of stupidity.”

Patrizia Asproni is the president of the Confcultura association. This organization promotes the cultural heritage of Italy and attempts to preserve high standards in the level of services that Italian cultural sites offer. Asproni said these “repeated shows of rudeness and barbarity” take place because people feel they can act with impunity. Asproni said that Italy should adopt a much stricter policy, similar to that of Singapore, for example, where people who are disrespectful in public face hefty fines and other penalties.

Florence, Italy’s cultural gem The beautiful city of Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region, one of Italy’s most breathtaking regions.

Florence is a city that is exceptionally blessed by history, art, and culture. It could be described as Italy’s cultural gem.

Firenze, as the Italians call this city, has been known as the birthplace of the Renaissance for centuries. Florence is home to some of the most beautiful, fascinating, and iconic masterpieces that continue to captivate millions of people today.

These include the statue of David by Michelangelo and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. The city is full of charm and beautiful medieval architecture. Its stunning structures can only be surpassed by one of its own: the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Virgin Mary of the Flowers), which is also known as the Duomo.

This monumental temple took over 140 years to build and is one of Italy’s most well-known Christian churches, along with Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. Florence’s entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a proud title that not many places in the world can claim.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the girl wasn’t a Japanese tourist.

Somehow that seems appropriate behavior with a statue of the Roman god of excess. The celebrants of Bacchus’s rituals were primarily women, I believe.

If she’s unidentified, how do they know she’s a tourist? She could be a local resident who decided to goof off.

She could claim she’s BLM/Antifa and just be happy she didn’t tear the statue down.

Had a sailor from the USS Coral Sea piss on a statue of Ataturk in Turkey . A mob chased him and beat him, he had to take refuge at a police station, he was thrown into prison. Reagan had to call the president of Turkey. A large amount of US dollars was paid. The kid got Admirals mast and was flown back to the states to start his prison sentence.

Thank you. She is obviously someone who is a closet exhibitionist at heart. If she were a real exhibitionist, she would have taken off most of her clothing first.

Well, this tramp’s behavior was disgusting, but, at least, she didn’t leave a permanent mark of any sort. One sees graffiti in Venice and in Rome, and the Italians apparently are fine with it. You can even take a tour to see graffiti. Loathsome.

Modern graffiti is so crude. However, 2000 year old Roman graffiti is kind of cool!

Me too. At least it will be hard as a stone...

Based on the photograph, I would have to say the statue had no limitations!

Hi.

Just between you and me, I (and others) jumped into the Trevi fountain in Roma. Naked.

It was June/July 1975. I was drunk and stupid.

I didn’t get caught, but got some offers for a date. I donated 50 L coin.

Roma will do that to you if you hadn’t had leave in a year.

The tour I am talking about takes you through places that have modern-day graffiti.
