Short and long sleep duration associated with blood vessel damage in those recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
Medical Xpress / Diabetologia / Annual Mtg of the Eur Assoc for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) ^ | July 11, 2024 | Mette Johansen et al

New research shows that people recently diagnosed with diabetes who experience short or long sleep duration are more likely to experience microvascular disease (damage to small blood vessels), which could ultimately lead to more serious complications.

Microvascular complications, such as retinopathy and nephropathy, are major contributors to complications associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Nighttime sleep duration was classified into three categories: short (<7 h), optimal (7 to <9 h), and long (9 h or more).

In total, 396 participants had valid sleep duration measurements, UACR measurement and eye examination. The median age was 62 years with a mean diabetes duration of 3.5 years.

The distribution of sleep duration was 12% (n=49) with short sleep duration, 60% (n=238) with optimal sleep duration, and 28% (n=109) with long sleep duration. The prevalence of microvascular damage was 38%, 18%, and 31% in the short, optimal, and long sleep duration groups, respectively. Short sleep duration was significantly associated with a 2.6 times increased risk of microvascular disease compared with optimal sleep duration. Similarly, long sleep duration was independently associated with a 2.3 times increased risk of microvascular disease compared to optimal sleep duration.

Furthermore, the association between short sleep duration and microvascular disease was accentuated by age. Interestingly, for participants aged under 62 years, short sleep duration only increased the risk of microvascular damage by 23%; but for those participants aged 62 years and over, short sleep duration was associated with a 5.7 times increased risk of small blood vessel damage compared to optimal sleep duration.

The authors conclude, "In recently diagnosed T2DM patients, both short and long sleep durations are associated with a higher prevalence of microvascular disease compared to optimal sleep duration at night. Age amplifies the association between short sleep duration and microvascular disease, suggesting increased vulnerability among older individuals."

Thank you very much and God bless you.

A short sleep period (under seven hours), in those over 62, was associated with a 570% increase in microvascular disease.

Many may already know they have this problem, from their albumin/creatinine ratios or by having diabetic retinopathy, which were the two ways they identified issues in this study.

What this study may provide is the possibility that sleep time is part of the cause of the issue. It was only an association, but it is a possibility.

To sleep longer get a good bed and especially do not drink anything for several hours prior to sleeping or you will wake up every 1.5hrs to 2hrs like I do!

I bought a new mattress this 4th of July sale called B.I.A Eastman House Cynthia Plush mattress $1,600 sale price ($300 off) with 744 coils (thicker springs), from My Sleep Mattress store in Woodland Hills, Calif and a Rize Tranquility II adjustable foundation $300 sale price ($795 regular). It is one of those that the top and bottom ends are adjustable using a remote control.

The mattress is tufted meaning the layers are sewn together.
The mattress is a Saatva brand. They have mattress by mail but are getting involved in sales locally and those mattress’s are built better unlike the online versions. It is about 12.5” thick and has handles sewn in on the sides. It is heavy with edge support.
B.I.A custom builds beds for dealers. I have seen this on sale as low as $1,100

I raise the top end a bit and slept better then I have in years. My back feels much better with no pain as there is no sagging. I have Sciatica and needed a better bed then I had before. This new bed hopefully will help with the healing.
The last beds I have had ended up going soft or lumpy and or developed a crease as the layers shifted within months or a year.

Only time will tell how long this one will last. It does have a 15 year warranty.

I tried a Aireloom mattress which felt really good while in the store but the $6,000 price was too much....!

those mattress’s are built better unlike the online versions.

Wonder why that would be? Seems pretty perverse to do such a thing.

I could not stay asleep and dreaded waking up at 3 am and being unable to fall back asleep. I started many of my days at 4 am and could barely keep my eyes open.

I made two changes:

1. I only drink one cup of regular coffee a day, as soon as I wake up. The rest of the day, it’s regular tea and after about 8 p.m. decaf tea.

2. I take one high-absorption magnesium tablet every night before I sleep.

Result: I am sleeping better now than at any time in my life.
I sleep soundly from about midnight to about 8 am every night. If I wake up needing to pee at 3 am I’m asleep 3 minutes after I get back into bed.

Those are exactly the kind of simple changes that we all need to try.

It can be amazing how many health fixes can be so easy and inexpensive.

I totally agree. If we all take just a few proactive measures to improve sleep health and gut health we will all live a lot longer.

I fall into the “optimal” range - although I get up a couple times for the bathroom, LOL.

#4 The reason is the edge support. Online versions have none as they have to be rolled up and put in a box. When you sit down on those bed you sink and soon will have a depression.
If they have springs the mattress will bounce you around with any movement. Others are all foam like latex and memory foam.
